Go over the two readings I have attached. Write a one paragraph reaction to EACH of the readings. Your post  must include one critical question. (Make up a critical question that has to do with the readings). After that answer these 3 questions 1) Most people assume that radical means extreme, but it actually means to get to the root of something – to get to the cause of some issue/problem. For Dorothy Smith, what is sociology’s problem? What is the root of this problem? 2) Marx says that economic exploitation alienates us from our species being – our own humanness. What might he mean by this? How does economic exploitation make us less human?

Answer each question base on the reading. 1) Explain the steps of the scientific method that sociologists must take before they can develop a hypothesis about relationships between prospective variables. Should be around 200 words long (full paragraph). 2) Carry out each of the 4 following steps. (a) Ask a sociological research question followed by a hypothesis. Be sure to ask a sociological question about social variables (think race, class, gender, age, etc) and how they relate to each other. It cannot be a yes/no question – you may want to review the lecture on methods and questions before completing this question. (b) Identify the independent and dependent variables in your question. (c) Explain which research method you think would be best to investigate the relationship between these two variables. (d) Explain what kind of sampling methodology you would use and why. Should be about 250 words long (2 full paragraphs).

Debate the C. Wright Mills’ paradigm of “private trouble,” and “public issue.” Do numbers of people constitute a social problem? Who should be afflicted, and how many people, before society responds to the problem? As former president Bill Clinton once argued, if the ban on illegal drugs saves one life from turning to drugs, is worth it?  Use an example from current events or the “news” to substantiate your position.

A rite of passage is an event that marks a person’s progress from one status to another. 1. When I ask students in any particular class how many of them identify as “feminists,” very few raise their hands, and those who do raise their hands are female students. However, when I ask how many people in the class would state they personally believe in “equality and respect for all forms of life,” and “resisting oppression of women, men, people with disabilities, people with any gender or sexual identity, people of any race, ethnicity or religion, elderly people, children, animals or our planet,” nearly every hand in the class goes up (Fixmer-Oraiz and Wood 4). Obviously, our cultural images of feminists are quite negative and drastically different from the definition of feminism in the previous sentence. Throughout the talk, Roxane Gay then provides alternate ideas about feminism. Paragraph #2: 1) Describe how Roxane Gay discusses her understandings of feminism. 2). Bonnie Dow states that specific aspects of The Mary Tyler Moore Show are in direct conflict with feminist praise for the show, and that the show instead promotes “a traditional picture of the female within the family through Mary Richards’s implicit roles as wife, mother, and daughter” (265). But Susan Douglas praises The Mary Tyler Moore Show, claiming that “few shows embodied more perfectly the intertwining of traditional femininity with new feminist ambitions” (41). In “Media, Gender, and Feminism,” Susan Douglas states that television shows in the mid-1960s “subtly (and metaphorically) blended women’s emerging desire for liberation with their traditional roles as helpmates and love interests” (p. 40).
