Part A Objective: Recognize characteristics of informational social influence. After checking into a hotel, Emma suddenly hears pounding on her door. A man in a uniform is standing there telling her there’s smoke on a lower floor and the electricity is possibly going to shut off. She should prop her door open and evacuate as quickly as possible. Later, Emma returns to find that her laptop and jewelry have been stolen. She has fallen victim to informational social influence. Based on your understanding of informational social influence, outline and explain the four (4) factors and conditions that encouraged Emma to conform. Part B Objective: Describe the need to be accepted in the context of normative social influence. Based on Schachter’s “Johnny Rocco” study, describe three (3) stages involved in persuading “rebels” to conform to group norms. Describe an instance in your life when you were persuaded to adopt or reject group norms.

OPTION 1: We are learning this section on how gender is a social construction, meaning it is not intrinsic, fixed, or based on sexual characteristics. We “do” gender as individuals and society. We will be exploring how media, movies, and advertising are instrumental in constructing stereotypes about men and women. We will also be exploring how people do gender differently depending on different social settings and expectations of the social setting. After reading through all material your assignment is to find an advertisement (via the internet) that is gendered, sexist, hypersexualizing, and/or you see gender is being “done.” YOU MUST POST A PICTURE OR VIDEO IN THE DISCUSSION FORUM FOR THIS OPTION. Women are taught they are judged on their beauty, while men are taught that worth is all about smarts. Your job is to find an advertisement and analyze it by answering the following questions: How does the media, advertising, etc. have an impact on how people view and “do” gender? What other information can you find on this? (good place for outside credible sources!) Analyze you advertisement. How is your advertisement gendered, sexist, hypersexual, and/or depicts “doing” gender? Or all of the above? How does this ad feed into dominant cultural stereotypes of men and women? What is the message of your advertisement about gender? Who do you think is the intended audience? OPTION 2: After reading through all course material and focusing on Sociological Perspectives: Chapter 8: Gender and the Informal Control of Alcohol Use choose a group, social setting, subculture, etc. (much like I did in Sociological Perspectives) where gender is being “done.” You can choose any social setting you find particularly interesting, one you have experience with, or one you would choose to study. Once you have chosen a setting, describe your setting. This might be a good place for outside credible sources and doing some research on your chosen setting. For example, there is a plethora of research on how gender is “done” in the college party scene (the scene that I studied). Using terms/concepts from readings and lectures, how is gender being “done” in your chosen setting? Are people following dominant cultural gender norms of masculinity and femininity? Are people transgressing dominant cultural gender norms? Why or why not? Are people treated differently in this setting based on their gender? Imagine you have been hired as a consultant for the United Nations. You have been asked to write an analysis of how global population growth has caused the following problem and how it affects climate change or population growth in a developing country of your choosing: A growing global population that consumes natural resources is partially to blame for the release of greenhouse gases since human consumption patterns lead to deforestation, soil erosion, and farming (overturned dirt releases CO2). However, the critical issue is the burning of fossil fuels (hydrocarbons) such as coal, oil, and natural gas to produce energy that is used for things such as electricity production, and vehicle, heating, and cooking fuels. The UN has asked that you choose a developing country from this list: . The UN has also given you the following guidelines. Content The UN has asked that your paper contain three sections. It has asked that each section be one page (or approximately 300 words) in length and answer specific questions, identified in the outline below. The UN also asks that you use examples from your developing country when answering the questions. Introduction Provide an introduction (a half-page minimum) that addresses points a-e below. Victimization is not a process with clear-cut elements, but rather various across different victim populations, including those that are traditionally underserved by helping professions. Underserved victim populations include the homeless, rural residents, ethnic/racial/sexual minorities and those with disabilities. Each of these populations presents different challenges for helping professionals, including geographic, social and cultural barriers that may cause victims to resist help or reintegration. By Day 4 Post and analysis of an underserved victim population within your current or future field as a helping professional, and post a brief description detailing their demographics and needs. The United States has one family-friendly policy: the Family Medical Leave Act. It took about a decade to pass and, after a long fight, offers only unpaid leave of up to 12 weeks a year to care for yourself, a child or a family member. It is restricted to workers in companies with more than 50 employees, who work full-time and have been with the firm for more than one year, and thus doesn’t cover 40 percent of the U.S. workforce. Other nations have many other policies. Please take a few minutes and briefly research the family policies of another nation. What nation did you select and what was your data source? What were the key features of the policy? What was unique and interesting to you? Why do you think the United States lags behind other democracies in efforts to help families? The clip below is the first Super Bowl commercial to feature an interracial family and the company aired a series of commercials with this family the previous year. This commercial sparked controversy and conversation. Why do you think this representation of family leads to debate? How does the media present families? How are race, class, and gender intersecting with pop cultural representations of family? Can you think of other examples of the diversity of families represented in the media? It is important to understand how those suffering from mental health problems may be affected by the social stigma attached to mental health and the discrimination they experience. Often times, stigmas attached to a mental health diagnosis may perpetuate their issues, which in turn, can make their troubles worse, making it challenging to seek out professional help. In your paper: 1. Provide a definition of stigma in the mental health field, and how it affects individuals seeking professional help (2 points). 2. Define the term disability, and explain how it plays a role in health and well-being (2 points). 3. Describe how certain diagnoses may be overused or frequently misdiagnosed. (3 points) 4. Many scholars argue that measures should be taken to try to reduce world population growth. However, others say that such actions are not necessary and may even be harmful to traditional cultures. Look up arguments from both sides of the debate. Provide a summary of both sides and explain which side you agree with more why.
