When evaluating a program, there are numerous ways to collect data about its participation, impact, and success. A particularly powerful method that may be appropriate for program evaluation is qualitative field research. Qualitative field research allows the researcher to collect descriptive data about experiences directly from individuals in face-to-face settings. When evaluating such complex issues as human attitudes, behaviors, and opinions, qualitative research can provide in-depth information and rich insights that numerical data simply cannot provide. This type of research is called qualitative field research because it is conducted in the environments in which experiences, such as program interventions, take place. Researchers collect detailed notes or transcriptions from observations, face-to-face interviewing, or focus group conversations. In this Application, you consider how you might apply qualitative field research methods to needs assessments in human and social services. To Prepare Think back to the topic you selected for the Week 4 Discussion. Consider how you might evaluate a program for this topic using qualitative field research methods. Use the following questions to guide your thinking: What specific field techniques would you use to reach this population? Would you identify yourself as a researcher? For this essay, you will apply what you have learned about the structural causes of racial wealth inequality OR racial income inequality to counter a culturally racist statement.   Begin by imagining yourself explaining to someone who has made a culturally racist statement why they are wrong. Make sure to do the following: Explain why a statement is culturally racist Choose between racial wealth inequality OR racial income inequality Identify the structural causes of your example: Racial gaps in wealth and income can be explained by a number of historical and institutional factors which sociologist call “structural.” Identify at least 3-4 examples of these structural causes and explain each one. Make a closing argument: Succinctly argue why a structural explanation of racial inequality disproves a cultural one.

For your final discussion, reflect on what you have learned about the Four Lenses(natural science,social science,history, & humanities), the Liberal Arts, and your topic(special education & disabilities). What is an ally? Does Ayvazian’s use of the term provide an adequate model for people in dominant positions in the culture or people with relative power to enact social change? Why or why not? What do Anderson and Accomando say about coalition work?
