Cultural Norms

For the final exam, you will combine what you’ve learned from our lecture videos and class readings. You will use information from these sources (and ONLY these sources) to answer ONE of the three questions below. Please indicate which question you’re answering on your exam by placing the question number at the top of your essay (you do not need to repeat the question itself). Exam is due Monday, December 7 at 11:59 EST. NO LATE SUBMISSIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED UNLESS AN EXTENSION IS PRE-APPROVED BY YOUR GRADING INSTRUCTOR. Anyone granted an extension must submit their essay via email. If you do not receive a confirmation email from your grading instructor within 24 hours, please email again to confirm submission was received. Questions (choose only ONE to answer): In what ways can investigating the history of the environment, health, technology, and science teach us about society as a whole? For example, in what ways do these topics teach us about politics, economics, religious beliefs, social and cultural norms, etc.? In what ways does technology influence broader societal trends and beliefs and in what ways do they influence technology? In what ways can we challenge the idea of history as a linear progression? Do we see examples in the history of technology that defy the idea of constant “progress”? Do we see examples of previous technologies returning and being repurposed? Many say that “necessity is the mother of invention,” while David Nye proposes that often “invention has been the mother of necessity.” Briefly explain his theory and support this idea using evidence from throughout the semester. Specifics: !  Minimum word-count: 1,500 words (maximum 1700) !  You MUST CITE your information (parenthetical citations, footnotes, or endnotes are all acceptable). Citation information for class readings can be found in the syllabus. For lecture videos, you may use short, informal citations (ex. “The Role of War lecture” or “Crash Course: Computing lecture.” !  In order to assess everyone in the same way, you CANNOT use sources used for your film essay (unless you used lecture material or class readings for your essay) or any other outside sources. !  You should balance your use of sources so you’re regularly citing information from both the readings and lecture videos !  You should answer the question in a cohesive, well-organized essay. It should not just be a list of facts. However, you should include many detailed examples when answering the question !  Exams should be uploaded as Word documents or PDF files. Please do not upload other files types (ex. Pages, link to a Google Doc, etc.)

Wave Of Feminism

For this paper, find an interaction online in which gender is being done. It can be a social media comments section, a response to a post, a video interaction, Reddit interaction, etc. In this paper, analyze the interaction using at least one wave of feminism (or one concept from one wave of feminism) and one gendered institution. This paper should have five (5) parts:   1.      Introduction: provide an attention getter and preview for the rest of the paper. Explain what you are going to do in the paper and what theories and/or concepts you are going to use to unpack the gender interaction you are going to introduce. 2.      Online interaction: provide a full transcript of the online interaction here and explain the context of the online interaction. On what website did you find this interaction? If it is a video, provides a transcript of the video. 3.      Wave of feminism: use at least one wave of feminism to explain what is happening in the online interaction. First, lay out what concept you are using and explain the background of the wave of feminism. Then, use the concept to explain what is happening in the interaction. For example, if you are using the concept of “calling out people in positions of power” from the fourth wave of feminism, explain the background of Fourth Wave feminism and the context of society calling out people in positions of power. Then, use that concept to explain what is happening in the online interaction you are analyzing. 4.      Gendered institution: use at least one gendered institution to explain what is happening in the online interaction you are analyzing. First, explain the gendered institution you are using and unpack the background. Then, apply it to the online interaction. For example, if you are using “gendered education,” you would maybe first talk about the underlying values taught by hidden curriculum and then using that to explain what is going on in the online interaction. 5.      Conclusion: finally, summarize your application of both the wave of feminism and the gendered institution you chose to the online interaction and make a closing argument about gender and communication.   Complete each section of this paper thoughtfully and thoroughly while addressing each and every prompt on this sheet.  Please use APA formatting and include a title page with an interesting paper title. Cite all sources.

Assignment TASK 1 1.               Find in the literature or develop yourself a hypothesis or hypotheses you would like to test. I strongly advise you draw upon a middle range theory of come up with your hypothesis or hypotheses. Hypotheses should be logical, clear, and testable. 2.               Provide a short paragraph describing why testing this hypothesis is important. 3.               Identify the concepts in the hypothesis or hypotheses and their definitions. Are these satisfactory definitions? Can you improve on them? 4.               Attach an article/relevant-pages-from-a-book that is the source of your idea. Make me a copy I can keep.   5.               Find in the literature or develop yourself a hypothesis or hypotheses you would like to test. I strongly advise you draw upon a middle range theory of come up with your hypothesis or hypotheses. Hypotheses should be logical, clear, and testable. 6.               Provide a short paragraph describing why testing this hypothesis is important. 7.               Identify the concepts in the hypothesis or hypotheses and their definitions. Are these satisfactory definitions? Can you improve on them? 8.               Attach an article/relevant-pages-from-a-book that is the source of your idea. Make me a copy I can keep. As sociologists, you should do a sociological study. You should also consider a topic that as a connection to other studies. This will make this project easier to do. I have wandered into new territory in the past; it took five years and five versions of the proposal before it was finally funded. ——- Soci 623 Assignment TASK  2  Finding and Describing Articles or Book Chapters   Hopefull you have chosen something sociological providing a theory and its parts. You should attempt to find at least of 4 of these. Explain how these help you move beyond assignment 1. Address shortly what you found in terms of these papers. The more papers you find, the more likely you will find definitions of the concepts how they provided in the study in its measurement.        Soci 623 Assignment TASK  3 Sampling Plan   1.               Define your population. Who you wish your sample to represent? 2.               Discussion possible sampling frames and how you might use them. If your population is sociology majors, your sampling frame is all sociology majors. However, you may find it more practical to cluster/stratify colleges/universities with sociology programs. A possible frame is a list of such majors provided by the selected schools. You would then propose sampling some portion of these will probably consist of some portion of those majors. What techniques will you use to select member of the sample? Is there a possibility for bias in your sample? 3.               Suggest a sample size, based on the statistical power you believe to be acceptable. Mention what that power is and what table in Clark-Carter you used. You may not be able to get a good estimate for this because you have no information on effect size. The conservative approach is to assume a weak effect size and use the appropriate table.           Soci 623 Assignment TASK  4   Your next project step is to formulate a survey instrument. You need to identify the variables you wish to examine statistically and to test your hypotheses. These include independent variables, dependent variables, and control variables. You may wish to think about Aneshensel’s advice about identifying rival hypotheses and creating measures for them. Some of you have already done this. You also need to consider how you will format the questionnaire in terms of question order, instructions, definitions of key terms, and so on. Consult your notes and text books to make sure you aren’t making common errors.   While this is a draft, do pay attention to the formatting and wording issues. If you are using someone else’s questions, this is ok as long as you give them credit.   Finally, develop a narrative that explains which questions represent the concepts in your hypotheses. Reviewers expect such explanations in the proposals they evaluate.           Soci 623 Assignment TASK  5   Pretest of Questionnaire   By now you should have begun a questionnaire. Once you have a draft of this you need to pretest it. I am not too demanding regarding this exercise. You should administer the questionnaire to approximately 10 persons. At the end of each administration, ask your respondents what they thought each question was about and their interpretation of the answer choices. You should also ask if 1) you left out something the respondents believe should have been asked and 2) were there any answer choices that should have been provided but were left out. You may try out some of the cognitive interview questions mentioned in class.   The function of this exercise is to determine whether you instrument works the way you think it does. Do the questions mean the same to the respondents as they do to you? Do the respondents misunderstand some of the words or the way the sentences that make up the question are worded? Have you left out important answer choices? Have you made assumptions about the respondent in your question that may not be true?           Soci 623 Assignment TASK  6   This is the last assignment prior to the final project document. A data analysis plan ought to be tied closely to your focal hypotheses, rival hypotheses (if you plan to test such things), and control variables. Let me give you some hints regarding this plan. Using Aneshensel’s description is a good starting point in terms of organizing your thoughts. Next turn to possible statistical analyses you would undertake after you have collected your data.   One point that I have tried to stress is the importance of multivariate statistics (e.g., multiple regression; logistic regression with multiple independent-control variables; principal components analysis and related factor analysis techniques; cluster analysis; structural equation modeling and so on). The vast majority of research publications involving surveys use multivariate statistics. The hint here is that you need to think in the same terms. Most of you have proposed questionnaires that make this possible; if you are not sure about how to go about describing this, email me.

Acid Effect

https://www.huffpost.com/entry/daily-stormer-nazi-style-guide_n_5a2ece19e4b0ce3b344492f2  Answer each question in a page 1. The vile text from the “Daily Stormer”, and Sartre’s text, are about the extreme version of the acid effect of excessive irony — not just the loss of decent values, but about their replacement with psychotic ones. Relate them to Aristotle’s conception of buffoonery. 2. Perkins is trying to give ordinary work a transcendent, even religious, sort of value or dignity. In what way is this a reversal of Aristotle’s view? As best as you can tell from your knowledge of history, why was this an anti-Catholic position when Perkins took it? The file and link go to the first question.

Survey Research

Final Assignment Paper  for Parameters of Social Research on Sociology Answer all 4 questions in the paper of final assignment questions and instructions. In the paper, you should carefully answer all questions based on tables and statistical figures, and data. Economists and political scientists sometimes debate the merits of economic change versus political change in the development of gender equality in a given country (sociologists hold the coats). Economists would argue that economic development increases opportunities to make money, increases incomes themselves and thus open up opportunities for all. Economists would argue that there are positive effects of economic development; these are seen through a direct (positive) effect of economic development on gender equality and indirect (positive) effects of economic development on mass media exposure, which in turn increases gender equality. People with more money can afford to buy more mass media products. Economists also argue that in the long run, economic development decreases income inequality; this too would eventually increase gender equality, as income inequality is positively related in gender inequality. Equal income equals equal treatment, according to this position. Political scientists have countered that the chief requirement for gender equality is the presence of democratic institutions (i.e., elected chief executive; elected representatives; checks and balances between executive branch and legislative branch; etc.). They argue that gender equality occurs largely through direct effects (positive) of democratic institutions on gender equality; but argue that there are also positive effects of political institutions on the availability of mass media outlets and that these outlets will reflect more diverse points of view. Democratic institutions also lead to lessened income inequality, according to this position. With an eye towards trumping the political scientists, economists would argue that only high income countries possess democratic institutions. Based on the path model and calculations of indirect effects, who is right? Are they both right; wrong? Be sure you discuss all main and all indirect effects in answering this question! Assume that an effect is + or – 0.15 is statistically significance.  2) . An investigator was interested in the relationship between the perception that drinking alcohol causes poor health and drinking behavior (amount of alcohol consumed). She hypothesized that the more the respondent perceived that drinking causes poor health, the lower amount of alcohol the respondent consumed. The table below expresses what she found. a. What was the total sample size of this study? b. Identify the independent, dependent and control variables. c. Correctly percentage each table. d. Calculated chi squared for each table: independent with dependent variable (control variable is ignored here)=l54.8. Independent variable with dependent variable controlling for the first category of the control variable=43.4; for the second category=98.0; for the third category=66.4. Based on the appropriate tabular chi squared for each table this size ( chi squared tabular =5.99), is the relationship between the independent and dependent variables significant? Is the relationship significant across the categories of the control variable? What can we conclude about the relationship between the independent and dependent variables, with the results of the control variable analysis in mind? 3. We were interested in whether questions regarding were good measures of teaching their children how to deal with buying food and preparing food. I am sending you the SAS output with correlations plus Cronbach’s alpha. I have also have a second set of correlations regarding construct validation. Are the measures of teaching the children provide the level for Cronbach’s alpha?Next, I provided several hypotheses regarding measures that we might believe that measures are valid. 4. There is a heated debate over whether interviewers should conform to the principals of standardized interviewing in collecting survey data; some argue that greater freedom for interviewer probing/following up answers and re-wording questions to assist the respondents’ understanding of what is being asked should be allowed. Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each approach; which approach is more promising re delivering valid, reliable, and accurate information? Why?
