Gender Roles

For your Literary Analysis Research Essay in this course, you are seeking to investigate a topic related to specific course texts, and analyze that topic to present a coherent argument about those very texts, leading to a unique idea or interpretation. In order to get started with that, you need to develop your critical question. This will help you hone in on texts and ideas you want to address. It will also allow me to provide you with feedback on how to best proceed. In your research paper topic submission, you will provide a research question, a working thesis, and a basic outline. You should also include why you want to write on the topic you’ve chosen. Your submission will be graded on the Research Topic Proposal Rubric (located in the Course Rubrics page). Requirements: Topic You must provide the author’s name and title of the work that you will be analyzing in your research paper. You may choose one of the following works as your topic: Gilgamesh The Iliad The Ramayana of Valmiki The Aeneid The Song of Roland Dante’s Inferno Lysistrata Machiavelli’s The Prince Quality of Thesis Your thesis must be clear and arguable. When you write your thesis in your paper, you should avoid using phrases like “I think” and “I believe”; however, in the drafting phase, these phrases may help you organize your ideas. Thesis: All papers must have a clearly worded thesis that states exactly what your paper intends to prove As you research, your ideas may change; therefore, you may modify your thesis as you work on the paper. Structure You should submit your (1) Research Question, (2) Working Thesis, and a (3) Basic Outline of your final paper. Research Question: The development of the research question will help you find and angle or focus. However, as a rule of thumb, just think what you want to know about the topic, why it is important? What ideas or areas do you want to explore? Put that in the form of a question. Example of Research Questions: You may think: What is Homer saying in The Iliad about the suffering and loss in war? What does The Iliad tell us about the role of women? Thesis: All papers must have a clearly worded thesis that states exactly what your paper intends to prove. This thesis needs to be supported by textual evidence from the works you are writing about. So, here, state your question in the form of a statement that you can prove. For Example: Homer’s portrayal of women in The Iliad reveals gender roles as women are depicted as being inferior to men both physically and intellectually. Basic Outline: You are just at the beginning of your research, but imagining now what this paper will look like will help you as you engage in your research. What kinds of material will you need to support your position? What elements will you have to prove? Intro Material: what will you have to address in the introduction. Remember, it is customary to conclude the intro paragraph with your thesis. Supporting Idea #1: Include the points you will have to prove or the evidence you will have to provide in order to support the thesis of your paper. Supporting Idea #2: Include the points you will have to prove or the evidence you will have to provide in order to support the thesis of your paper. Supporting Idea, Etc. Conclusion

Personal Beliefs

Assignment 3         You will be graded on the quality of your answer, logical order to your answer, critical thinking, and clarity of your work.  Please remember that you are being graded on how well you can apply class material (sociology class).  Please keep in mind you are not defending your personal beliefs, you can only be graded on how well you understood course material.  Therefore, the book must be your main reference Number and restate each question that is answered.  Content is extremely important.  Do not write simple sentences to meet the minimum requirement.  If you want to assure that you receive a 100 on your assignments write more than the minimum requirement.  Also please make sure that all your answers are numbered and that all margins are consistent.  Please be mindful of your spelling and grammar (use spell check). Also, when writing your answers, please try to leave your personal biases and value judgments out. You may use examples from everyday life to support the information you provide from the textbook.  Be mindful that there are various perspectives to topics covered in class.  It is helpful to quote the textbook or you may provide additional information from another source in your answer.  When you do you must cite your work (APA is preferred). Writing the bare minimum is never enough for full credit. I need to see that you not only read and understood the material, but also that you can use apply said information critically.  On the assignments please number your answers to coincide with the questions, also, please separate the chapters. This makes it easier for me to grade.  Give a lot of details and examples in your answers.  One, two, or three sentence answers will not be given credit.  Additionally, short answers will receive a grade that corresponds with your effort.  You must write at least one paragraph per question to receive credit (Approximately 4 to 5 sentences per question).  Do not provide answers in an outline format.  DO NOT OUTLINE YOUR ANSWERS.  Good Luck.  Chapter 8 1.     A controversial question concerns the right to have a child.  Should all persons be granted the right to have a child?  Are there some categories of people who should not be allowed to have children?  Why or why not?  2.     How would a functionalist view pronatalism?  How would a conflict theorist view pronatalism?   Chapter 9 1.     Which theory is most useful for explaining childhood development and why?  2.     If grandparents are acceptable caregivers, then why should we object to older women and men who want to have children? Chapter 10   1.    Ask students to discuss why the economy plays such an important role in family life.  Be sure to discuss family and work policies as well as such factors as wages and the cost of living. 2. Ask students to discuss work-family stress and ways to cope with the stress.  How much of this stress should be the responsibility of the family?  How much should be the responsibility of employers?   Chapter 11 1.     Do families today experience higher levels of stress than in the past? If so, why should this be the case? 2.     Do employers have a responsibility to work to prevent family violence? Would they benefit directly or indirectly if they were proactively involved in reducing family violence?
