Studying Religion – Assignment Content This assignment offers you the opportunity to explain the commonalities found in different religions, provide examples of situations involving ethics that are faced by people in the world today, and identify contemporary challenges and issues related to religion.  Written Summary (Select just One of the bullets) Write a 700-word paper that addresses the following topics. Pick only 1 of the three bullets. Do not have to address them all. What is essential (in the practices and beliefs) for a tradition to be called a religion? Illustrate your points by referring to the commonalities of at least 2 different religions. Include specific examples from the various religious traditions described in the Week 1 readings, such as a belief in one God or many gods and goddesses, the removal of one’s shoes before entering a place of worship, bathing and baptism as methods of spiritual purification, or refusing to eat certain types of meat. You may also include examples from your own religious tradition or another religious tradition with which you are familiar. What place does religion have in making ethical decisions? Include specific examples of situations involving ethics faced by members of a religion today. Reflect on your own spiritual beliefs, how have your ethics been influenced personally or professionally? If you hold no spiritual beliefs, consider how individuals you may know or work with are faced with ethical decisions that are influenced by their beliefs. Please read Chapter 6 on deviance:  Review the different theories on deviance, explaining why individuals are deviant, in our text. Upon review, define four different theories on deviance. Which theory on deviance would you apply to the “Bling Ring?” Which theory on deviance would you apply to serial killers?

Identify an issue related to racial inequality. Create a 3-slide presentation that applies one of the theoretical frameworks in chapter 2 to explain the issue you’ve identified. Slide 1: name and define the issue you are going to discuss, providing some evidence to show your audience that it is indeed a racial disparity. For example, if my presentation is going to focus the pandemic’s disproportionate impact on Latinx communities I might cite the following statistic: Latinas/os are 18 percent of the U.S. population, but they are approximately 28 percent of known COVID-19 cases (Fortier 2020). Slide 2: name and define the framework you are going to use to explain the issue. Let’s say I am going to focus on the “systemic racism” framework to explain the issue of Latinx overrepresentation among those with COVID-19. In this slide I would name and define that framework. Slide 3: apply the framework to explain the issue you have chosen. Continuing with my example, I would explain the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on Latinx community with the framework of systemic racism.

Hutchinson states that the purpose of the social work profession is to promote human and community well-being…actualized through its quest for social and economic justice, the prevention of conditions that limit human rights, the elimination of poverty, and the enhancement of the quality of life for all persons” (p. 1)).  Hutchinson also indicates that human behavior includes not just individual but corporate behaviors. IS DRUG ENFORCEMENT RACIALLY BIASED? We have been involved in what former President Richard Nixon called the “War on Drugs” since a press conference he held on June 18, 1971. President Nixon declared drug abuse “public enemy number one”. If you look at statistics, you can see who has been arrested since that time and for what types of drug crimes. You can also find out who and where drug offenders are incarcerated for their crimes. Are the numbers disproportionate by race, gender, or location? Now remember that when you research this topic you may use statistics but you have to intertwine facts about your topic gained from reading sociological sources. Write one page about this.
