Character Film Analysis

Character Film Analysis Paper Students will write a paper about their assigned movie. Your paper is an in-depth character analysis. You should choose one character as the focus and discuss (in detail) on the character and multiple psychological concepts  (not disorders) you see the character interacting with, propagating, etc. This paper should demonstrate your understanding of some of the particulars of film (think back to the discussion and readings on archetypes in film and other character types) and your ability to both identify and describe/apply numerous aspects of psychology and human thought/behavior to the character in the film. You can discuss the character’s relationships and interactions with others, just remember that your subject is one specific character.Your paper should be organized as follows and incorporate the items listed above. Be sure to label. Character Background – Describe the physical appearance and personality (in detail) of your character.Character Roles – Explore the roles that the character plays – in addition to unique character traits, the character will fit into specific roles/types.Character Growth – Outline the growth and development of the character. Describe how and why the character changes as the plot progresses. You will need to discuss the conflicts they experience.*Because it is important for students to learn and use APA style, you are expected to create a basic title page and reference page using APA formatting. Additionally, you must use APA in-text citations. You do not need to follow other formatting for APA research papers, as this is not a research paper. **You must include keywords on the bottom of the title page. These key words must include some of the psychological concepts you plan to discuss in your paper. What is the author’s main goal? The author has a specific character type and personality in mind when they write the character. They know how each character will fill each role and how that (role fulfillment) is demonstrated. I find it best to start with this item and move on from there. For example, you can’t say that Katniss (from The Hunger Games) is the hero unless she behaves like a hero. Use instances of heroic action to provide evidence of her hero character. You should think even more about the character type (don’t forget about the archetypes, but here are some more). Is your character a protagonist, antagonist? Is your character dynamic or static? Is your character a stereotypical representation? In detail, using several examples from the film, explain your assessment. I encourage you to do some additional research on these types. You should include basic information about your character (name, age, gender, social status, physical appearance, etc. – anything that helps the reader create a clear picture of the character). Then, it’s a good idea to think about how you might interview your character if you had the opportunity. Include:the character’s background (Harry Potter is an easy example. Has his difficult childhood {which you would describe a bit} and complicated relationships with family members made him a bad person? Made him a good person? How do you define these?)how/what other people/characters talk or think about your character how the character’s behavior is consistent/inconsistent in different situations. This is pulling on your knowledge of personality theory. If you identify inconsistencies, how do you explain them Relationships – with whom and how does your character interact during most of the story development?Motivation – what are the underlying reasons the character acts as they do. This will draw on the background (above). Do they act impulsively, ethically, methodically, etc.?Words and Actions – you should be weaving the character’s words and actions throughout the paper as “evidence” of your analysis. You have to use external research to support your statements.Protagonist- central figure in story. The plot of the film/story tells about their life and deeds. This is generally the/a main character and often the “hero” of the story. The protagonist MUST move the story forward.Antagonist- generally the “villain” in a story. Sometimes the antagonist changes throughout the story and is usually a very interesting character. The antagonist causes conflict from the protagonist. This is often the character you “love to hate”.Dynamic character- a dynamic character continues to change and evolve throughout the story. Maybe someone seemed shy and reserved in the first part of the film but became a strong leader later. Protagonists and antagonists are generally dynamic.Static character- a static character does not change much during the story. Their character profile remains pretty much the same from the start to the end of the film. You could analyze why they don’t seem to change.Stereotypical character- is your character a stereotypical representation of a particular personality type? Is your character a great athlete who’s terrible in school?Major character- plays a large and important role in the story.Minor character- these characters play smaller roles and are often static or stereotypical characters.
