Child Birth and Resiliency Discussion
1. Define the concept of resiliency and describe what role protective and risk factors play within the concept. How is resilience fostered in children? Would you consider yourself to be resilient? Why or why not? What would you consider as risk and protective factors for yourself? In the Fraser et al. (2004) reading, three types of resilience are described. Which type is most salient for you? Why? 2. Black women are three times more likely to die during childbirth and a recent study found that Black newborns are three times more likely to die during childbirth when cared for by a White doctor. Why do you think these racial disparities in infant and maternal mortality exist? What types of interventions can be implemented to mitigate, reduce, or eliminate these disparities? What could be the role of social workers in addressing this health crisis?
