Child Development 1 Final Project, Directions/Specifications and Rubric: The final assignment for CD 1 is to create a PowerPoint presentation (3-5 slides) that will document the development of your My Virtual Child (MVC) assignment from birth to adolescence as well as write a written letter to your child on their 18th birthday.
The final as a whole reflects your knowledge, experience and understanding of child development as well as developmental stages and theory.
Both the portfolio presentation and letter will incorporate three stages of development (infancy/toddlerhood, early childhood, middle childhood, adolescence) parenting practices, and understanding of child development and theory. The final assignment will be explained in 2 parts:
Part 1: The Portfolio Presentation: Each student will create a Powerpoint presentation (3-5 slides) that demonstrate your understanding of three stage of development. You will incorporate three questions from the list provided below, per developmental stage that will add insight and depth of your knowledge of your MVC.
In addition, each slide should incorporate images that can be used (either from real life or recreated from the internet) to represent important milestones, developmental stages and features of the MVC. Infancy/Toddler Questions: Pick three from the list below to use in your presentation: What is your childs name?
How did you choose that name? How did you see one of Piagets stages in your childs life? How did you promote your childs language development What kind of anxiety/fears did you see in your child? How did you respond? How would you classify your child’s temperament? Why? Did your child have secure or insecure attachment? Why?
What were your childcare arrangements for your child? What was the impact of this on your child? How did you help your child development movement skills? Early Childhood Questions: Pick three from the list below to use in your presentation:
How did you see pretend play in your child? How did you use scaffolding to help your child develop a skill? What type of gender typed behavior did you see in your child? How did you encourage or discourage gender stereotyped behavior in your child? How did you communicate about morality with your child? What was your parenting style?
How did you determine this? How did you respond to moodiness or aggressive behavior in your child? What were your childs interests? How did you encourage them? Middle Childhood/Adolescent Questions: Pick three from the list below to use in your presentation: How did you promote a fixed or growth mindset in your child? How did you respond to jealousy or sibling rivalry? How did friendships influence your child? Were they socially accepted or rejected? How did you promote healthful eating, exercise and sleep in your child?
How did your child adapt to high school? What was your approach to sexual education? How did you respond to use of drugs or alcohol in your child? How emotionally competent is your child? What was the influence of social media on your child? What were your childs plans after high school? Part II: Dedication Letter to Child on 18th Birthday: The second part of the assignment is to write a one page letter to your MVC on their 18th birthday.
This letter will document your understanding of your MVCs progress and how your parenting choices impacted their growth and development. Think of this letter as a fun way to document and reflect on what you have learned personally about child development, your own parenting style, and your child’s progress and growth into adulthood.
You will incorporate the same stages of development, milestones of development as well as theory as you did in your letter. Students must be present during the final exam class when the letters will be read/summarized to receive full points on the assignment.
