Climate Refugees, Migration and National Sovereignty In international relations, sovereignty is the state’s power to control internal affairs without external interference. This traditionally includes the physical preservation of one’s borders and the control over who can enter the state and who cannot. In this homework I would like you to discuss the challenges that climate migration is posing to national sovereignty. There has been a significant growth in international migration in recent years. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) estimates that the number of migrants in the world grew from 150 million to 214 million in the first decade of the twenty-first century. This growth is likely to continue as a result of growing demographic disparities, the effects of environmental change, new global political and economic dynamics, technological revolutions and social networks’ (IOM, 2010, p. xix). Although there are few instances of climate change as the sole factor in migration, climate change is widely recognized as a contributing and exacerbating factor in migration and in conflict. In 2018, the World Bank estimated that three regions – Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia – will generate 143 million more climate migrants by 2050 In your essay address the following issues 1) Explain the challenges that climate migrants pose to national sovereignty. 2) How is this problem manifested in the case of migrants from Latin America to the U.S? 3) In your opinion what strategies are needed to address the problem of climate migrants? a.
