For this assignment, you will select one of the controversial topics from the list provided, a variation on it, or some other topic of a similar nature that is of interest to you. Effects of labeling/diagnosis on children and families. Increased prevalence of particular (autism spectrum disorder, bipolar disorder and/or ADD/ADHD) childhood disorders.
Use and effects of medication in childhood disorders. Use and effects of alternative therapies such as wilderness camps and therapeutic boarding schools. Gender Identity You will write a short paper (a minimum of 5 pages, and a maximum of 8 pages + references) that discusses this topic. This paper is not intended to be an exhaustive literature review, but rather a focused essay providing informed opinions that are substantive and scholarly, not from personal experience.
You will cite the text and articles in APA format, and you will have a proper bibliography. For the topic you have selected you should describe: the nature of the controversy (the prevailing positions or opinions); what makes this a controversial issue; what evidence has bearing on this issue (a minimum of 4 resources is expected); which biases– cultural, research, assessor, and others, may impact public perception and dialogue on this issue, what are your opinions and conclusions concerning this issue; and how you think this issue might be resolved.
