[ORDER SOLUTION] Conventional Wisdom

Essay 4: New Myth Buster Argument Identify and investigate a claim based on “conventional wisdom,” popular stereotype, or current “consensus.” Examine and evaluate the reasons and evidence given to support the claim. Can you detect any logical fallacies connecting the evidence/reasons to the claim? Uncover the assumptions underlying the claim and determine the validity or invalidity of those assumptions. Conclude whether you think the claim is true, false, or undetermined. If you conclude that the claim is true, discuss what motives and other factors might influence people to deny the claim. If you conclude that the claim is false, discuss what motives or other factors might influence people to believe or perpetuate the claim. If your conclusion is undetermined, discuss both sets of possible motives and other factors. Analyzing your topic closely and considering historical precedents will aid you in this assignment. Incorporate into your argument two outside sources, at least one of which must be scholarly. Deborah Tannen’s “Who Does the Talking Here?” (Read, Reason, Write, 8-11) serves as a useful model for this option. Following is a partial list of common claims to help get you started:  males and females are fundamentally the same, males and females are fundamentally different, conservatives are greedy and closed-minded, liberals are compassionate and tolerant, fascism is a “right-wing” phenomenon, religion causes wars, science is antithetical to religion, “climate change” is going to destroy the planet in the next ten years, endemic racism pervades America’s police departments, capitalism is inhumane, socialism is fair, there is a 30% wage gap between men and women, human nature is inherently good… Minimum Length Requirement: 900 words (roughly three pages typed and double-spaced with one-inch margins)   Sources: Integrate into your text information and/or ideas from two outside sources, at least one of which must be scholarly. Following correct MLA format, you must cite (quote and/or paraphrase) each source at least once in the body of your essay and document each source at the end of your essay on a separate Works Cited page.
