Cultural Competency Scenario
A young Hispanic mother is seen by nurse practitioner in your clinic. The mother related to the nurse that she has been using a folk remedy called greta to help with her infants teething and colic. The nurse read that greta powder has very high levels of lead. When she tried to relate the dangers of lead poisoning to the mom, the mother became very agitated and said that the nurse just didnt understand and that she would continue to use it because it worked. The nurse wants to report the woman to Child Protective Services for child abuse and comes to you to enlist your help in filing the correct paperwork. o Do you agree or disagree that Child Protective Services should be called and why? o Search online for a tool you could use to assess the cultural proficiency of your staff.
