The network connectivity acts as the backbone of the entire system, allowing devices to communicate and share information securely (Drucker, 2015). This technology was coined in 1999 by Kevin Ashton, as he attempted to describe ways in which physical world could be connected to the internet via a network. Since the inception of this technology, it has found its way into nearly all aspects of human life, ranging from healthcare, military and computing among others (Fraga-Lamas et al, 2016; Harbers et al, 2018)). In the field of healthcare for instance, IOT is used to facilitate communication between medical devices located distance apart. For instance, it is used to facilitate remote sensing, data acquisition and information sharing between different devices. Benefits and challenges of IOT in healthcare Baker et al (2017), acknowledges that the Internet of things is a new technology which is yet to fully adopted in healthcare. The study however acknowledges that this technology has the potential to transform the healthcare industry by increasing access to healthcare for all people. Some notable applications of this technology include: remote health monitoring, assisted ambient living and diabetes management for the elderly populations (Baker et al, 2017; Achituv & Haiman, 2016). Remote monitoring will help improve the health conditions for patient, and lower the cost of healthcare for them. Other benefits associated with remote monitoring include: INTERNET OF THINGS IN HEALTHCARE 2 reduced strain on hospital resources, and high quality healthcare for the elderly. Adoption of IOT in healthcare will also give patients a large control over their health. INTERNET OF THINGS IN HEALTHCARE 3 Numerous scholars acknowledge that the adoption of IOT in healthcare has a positive outcome for patients, physicians and the healthcare industry as a whole. Laplante, & Laplante, (2016) opines that the utilization of IOT in healthcare can help eliminate the challenges associated with scarce resources in most healthcare facilities. Consequently, this technology can help improve patient’s well-being, by allowing them to be treated even when physicians, and other resources are scarce. The adoption of IOT in healthcare is also likely to bring down healthcare costs, increase efficiency, and allow healthcare facilities to operate optimally, and efficiently (Laplante, & Laplante, 2016; Dimitrov, 2016). Before implementing these technologies, it is pivotal to identify and address the challenges and issues associated with the use of IOT in hospitals. Baker et al (2017), acknowledges that the adoption of this technology in healthcare comes with associated challenges and risks. Specifically, the use of IOT in remote monitoring could expose consumers’ data to a significant security risk. Having consumer’s data on a single database could lead to security breaches which might affect consumers and healthcare organization as a whole (Achituv & Haiman, 2016; Baker et al, 2017, Islam et al, 2015). Discussion: Discuss the literature review findings of the attached The use of IOT for remote monitoring could also face challenges like the need to regularly monitor sensors to ensure they record consumers’ data accurately. IOT devices could prove disastrous if they ran out of battery, or a consumer moves out of range. The large volume of data collected and transmitted by IOT devices also poses a challenge to users, and the health care industry as a whole. Achituv & Haiman (2016), points out that by 2020, a key challenge that will face IOT in future will be the issue of data management. Research predicts that by 2020, over 40 trillion gigabytes of data will be collected from IOT devices. While most of these challenges can be INTERNET OF THINGS IN HEALTHCARE 4 easily solved, there is a need to ensure they consumers are confident that IOT devices can serve them efficiently, and securely. The adoption of IOT in healthcare will largely depend on how patients, physicians and all stakeholders perceive this technology. Some factors affecting the acceptance of IOT, and related technologies include: past experience, gender, age and voluntariness to use (Achituv & Haiman, 2016; Macik, 2017). In regard to age, the acceptance of IOT technologies is higher among young people than elderly individuals. On their part, older people prefer using devices that are easy to use, and friendly. The willingness to use IOT technologies is heavily influenced by factors such as level of clarity, and exposure to the technologies (Achituv & Haiman, 2016). To increase acceptance of IOT technologies among the public, there is a need to expose them to these technologies. Past studies Scholars have conducted numerous studies to determine the factors that influence the acceptance of IOT among users. Of interest among most studies is how factors such as level of education, knowledge on IOT, perceived usefulness, confidence and security concerns impact the acceptance of this technology among users. AlHogail, (2018) conducted a survey to determine the factors that positively influence trust, towards the adoption of domestic use IOT devices. The study was conducted through an online questionnaires conducted in the months of November and December 2017. The questionnaires had two sections, and one was supposed to input their demographic information in the first section. The information contained in this section include: IOT familiarity, age, level of education and English familiarity among others. In total, 400 people gave their responses regarding this issue. INTERNET OF THINGS IN HEALTHCARE 5 The study found out that consumers trust on IOT is influenced by product related factors, security related factors, and social related factors. However, the influence of security related factors is stronger than both the Social and product related factors. These factors include the perceived level of risks, and product security. Social related factors received 70% favorable responses, while security and product related factors 79% and 72% respectively. Collectively, 70% of clients ranked each domain as favorable. Discussion: Discuss the literature review findings of the attached The study shows that before implementing IOT technologies in healthcare, it is pivotal that one understands the factors that might encourage or hinder people from implementing or embracing this technology in hospitals. Namirimu (2015), conducted an observational study, to identify the challenges that users face, when interacting with IOT technologies. Understanding and addressing these challenges is pivotal, since it will help improve the acceptability of this technology among users. This study was conducted on five users, collected through strategic sampling. Namirimu utilized a combination of post observation questionnaires and observational of the users for data collection. Observation of the user was implemented using strategically presented video recorders. Afterwards, the users were provided with questioners to fill, on their experience when interacting with IOT devices. Results from this study showed that a large number of users lack enough exposure to IOT technologies. Namirimu suggests that there is a need to enhance public training on IOT related technologies. Databases Searched Resources for this study were gathered from five databases: Google Scholar, the National Center for Biotechnology Information databases, IEEE Xplore, PubMed and ProQuest. INTERNET OF THINGS IN HEALTHCARE 6 How I Searched The key phrases used in searching were: Internet of things, People’s Perception towards IOT, Acceptability of IOT, Benefits of IOT and Challenges Facing the implementation of IOT. Inclusion Criteria Resources selected for this study based on three key factors: Relevance to the topic of IOT, age of the material, and peer reviewed. On the relevance of the topic, the researchers selected only those articles that discussed IOT in relation in general: its benefits and challenges. Such articles also included those discussing factors affecting the acceptability of IOT, particularly in the healthcare sector. The articles selected were those which were not older than five years. This method helped to ensure that the study focused on the most recent information in relation to IOT. Lastly only peer reviewed articles from the mentioned databases were considered for the study.Discussion: Discuss the literature review findings of the attached This approach helped ensure that information used it the study was reliable, valid and credible. ? Statistical Analysis Results from the literatures were subjected to a statistical analysis to deduce meaning from it and to convert the data into meaningful information and to identify the perception of the people towards IOT technologies.
