What to Do Write a three- to five-page introduction section for your APA style research report, including citations to at least 4 journal articles (see details below)—plus an APA-style reference list. Write a one- to three-page method section for your APA-style research paper, including (at the very least) sections for participants and design and procedure. Resources In addition to this handout, there are various resources for planning and writing your introduction and method section. Section 11.2 of the textbook, Blackboard samples under the APA resources folder, a classic paper on writing APA style research reports by Bem (2003). Writing the Introduction Generic Outline There is a generic outline that almost all APA style introductions follow, and yours should follow this outline too. Opening – One or two paragraphs that introduce your theme and why it is important. Try to open in a way that will catch the reader’s interest and prompt him or her to read on. If you state the research question here, keep it brief (e.g., the current study sought to examine the correlation between variables A and B). Discussion: Merced Weight gain among freshmen Report Literature Review – A review of previous research and information on your topic. A good literature review both describes what is already known about the topic and makes clear why your particular research question is worth trying to Closing – One or two paragraphs that state your specific hypotheses and give an overview of your method, making clear why your method is a good one to use to answer your particular research One option would be to introduce the research question briefly in the opening and the specific hypothesis in the closing. Another is to focus the opening on the theme, the literature review on the background, and the closing on the general conclusions and the research question/hypothesis. References You should find and read a minimum of 4 scientific journal articles that are related specifically to your topic . You can also cite other trustworthy sources (e.g., magazine articles, websites) but these must be in addition to the scientific articles. Be sure to cite each of the articles in your introduction. You should not have any articles on your reference list that you do not cite nor should you cite any articles that are not on your reference list. You should describe at least two studies in detail. In general, the studies you describe in detail will be ones that are most similar to your study and/or the ones that provide the strongest rationale for your research question. Remember that there are other ways to use references. For example, you might use a reference to provide some interesting background information that establishes why your question is important. Also, you might use a reference to establish that a particular operational definition or method is a workable one: “We will use a variation on the procedure used by Price, Smith, and Lench (2006).” Again, look at some published articles to see some of the different ways that references are used. You should also note that you cannot simply tell your audience specific information without a source to support it. For example, saying that “people are using computers more than ever” would need a citation. Anything that goes beyond general knowledge should have a citation to support it. Given this, a good paper will likely have more than just four citations. Writing the Method Three Basic Formats You should pick one of the basic formats below for your method section. Again, see Section 11.2 of the textbook for details. Discussion: Merced Weight gain among freshmen Report Type I – Use when the stimuli, design, and procedure are very simple. Type II – Use when the design is more complicated. Type III – Use when you have complicated materials to describe. Method Participants Describe how many, how recruited or selected, how compensated, age and sex. Design and Procedure Describe design, materials, and procedure. Method Participants Design Procedure Method Participants Materials Describe stimulus materials, questionnaires, etc. (Design and) Procedure Additional Method Section Tips Most students can use type I given that their study designs tend to be relatively simple. Note that the heading of this section is just plain Method —not Methods or Method Section . Write in the past tense, as though you have already conducted the And write in complete sentences. Avoid bulleted lists and similar shortcuts. Do not include material that belongs in one section in other sections. The Participants section just describes who the participants were and how they were recruited. It does not say anything about what they did. If you have a separate Questionnaire section, then use that only to describe the questionnaires in detail … and do not describe them again in a later Questionnaires and stimulus materials must be described in detail. You cannot simply say that participants “completed a morality questionnaire.” Likewise, you cannot simply say that participants “saw photos of doctors in lab coats and doctors without lab coats.” You have to say where you got the photos, what kind of people were in them, whether they were the same people in the different conditions, etc. If your materials cannot be adequately described in writing, attach them (or a sample) as an appendix. Appendixes are lettered, not numbered. You still have to describe the materials, but you can also add, for example, “The complete questionnaire is presented in Appendix ” In this draft, you can use made-up numbers or just placeholders for information that you do not have yet: “The participants were XX undergraduates at the university. There were XX women and YY men. Their mean age was ZZ ” Write for someone who is not necessarily familiar with the area For example write, “We tested participants at an outdoor shopping ” Write for somebody who is familiar with basic research methods. For example, it is sufficient to say that you randomly assigned your participants to your different You do not have to explain the purpose of randomly assigning them.
