Discussion: Review of Current Healthcare Issues
RE: Discussion – Week 1- Main Post
Great Post, The issue of staffing shortages especially in nursing has been an ongoing one and unfortunately there hasn’t been any concrete resolution to this problem. There have been strategies and incentive that have been put in place by various organizations to essentially combat this problem or at least prevent it from escalating even more. Most hospitals and facilities have implored specialized efforts

by establishing a Retention and Recruitment committee to ultimately ensure job satisfaction is prevalent among Nurses that are being hired in an Organization which facilitates retention. This helps to slow down the high turnover rate in a clinical setting. The committee is also responsible for keeping the line of communication open with nurses that have been newly hired, to ascertain and address any challenges in scope of practice they might be faced with. heir new role and ways the Organization can help them.
There must be certain protocols set in place for staffing to be adjusted according to level of patient acuity as opposed to basing it on mere numbers so as to avoid Nurses burnout which in turn leads to high turnover. Evidence based practice as revealed that clinical settings with inadequate and disproportionate staffing ratios are positively correlated with higher readmission rates (Gnerre et al, 2017). This is an expense that can be avoided as it costs the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services approximately $26 billion annually which is very unnecessary. When there is a high patient-to nurse ratio, it often leads to an increased urinary tract and surgical site infections in patients in the clinical setting, according to Wei et al (2017). The negative impact of nursing shortage is extensive and has continued to ravage several healthcare organizations throughout the United States. Essentially, the long-term consequences of staffing shortages will lead to devastating consequences on local, regional, and national levels of healthcare. According to the Bureau of Labor statistics Employment Projections 2012-2022, the nursing profession is projected to grow from 2.71 million in 2012 to 3.24 million in 2022, a growth of approximately 20% (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2014). In addition, the Bureau suggests that there will be a need for 525,000 nursing replacements in the nearest future, which in turn will open up and create nursing roles to nearly 1 million as a result of the growth and replacements (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2014). The issue of nursing shortages needs to be addressed by healthcare organizations as the insufficiency of staff nurses would become detrimentally costly to the healthcare sector.

Discussion: Review of Current Healthcare Issues
Question Description
Discussion: Review of Current Healthcare Issues
If you were to ask 10 people what they believe to be the most significant issue facing healthcare today, you might get 10 different answers. Escalating costs? Regulation? Technology disruption?
These and many other topics are worthy of discussion. Not surprisingly, much has been said in the research, within the profession, and in the news about these topics. Whether they are issues of finance, quality, workload, or outcomes, there is no shortage of changes to be addressed.
In this Discussion, you examine a national healthcare issue and consider how that issue may impact your work setting. You also analyze how your organization has responded to this issue.
To Prepare:
Review the Resources and select one current national healthcare issue/stressor to focus on.
Reflect on the current national healthcare issue/stressor you selected and think about how this issue/stressor may be addressed in your work setting.
Post a description of the national healthcare issue/stressor you selected for analysis, and explain how the healthcare issue/stressor may impact your work setting. Then, describe how your health system work setting has responded to the healthcare issue/stressor, including a description of what changes may have been implemented. Be specific and provide examples
You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes.
Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages.
Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.
The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.

RE: Discussion – Week 1
Main Post
Given the current Covid-19 pandemic I feel this has been the biggest stressor affecting the global population. As a travel nurse I have been on the frontlines of many COVID crisis contracts the devastating impact it can have on patients, families and coworkers. One thing I’ve seen first-hand is the importance of PPE for keeping staff and the most vulnerable populations safe. Ensuring a commitment to PPE standards and guidance on quality control of personal protective equipment will assist in optimal infection control (Deepthi et al., 2020). My health care institution has made a commitment to protecting the nurses. Each nurse received a P100 mask with the highest standards in protection and infection control so that would not be stressor during the pandemic. Using the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) by health care professionals is a vital part in preventing the spread of the virus in the hospital setting as well as preventing community spread of the disease.
Another major impact of COVID is the mental well-being of health care workers. Not only has this impacted the patients, but health care workers have seen a significant increase mental health issues of fellow colleagues. Major epidemic outbreaks pose an increasing demand for health care workers. Constant increasing of infected cases, a rise in the rate of deaths, lack medicine, extensive media coverage, massive workload, lack of PPE and feelings of inadequate support all can contribute to the mental burden of the health care staff. In a study that assessed anxiety, stress, depression and insomnia, 63% of health care workers reported mental disturbance (Vizheh et al., 2020). The pandemic has brought upon a lot of psychological stress to all and interventions are important. At my hospital some of the interventions included online psychological support or having team members from the department come around and check up on us. Music therapy was frequently used at my hospital as it has shown to help decrease anxiety and has had many therapeutic effects (Lee & Thyer, 2013)

RE: Discussion – Week 1
Response
Nearly 40 million American adults have untreated substance use disorders or mental health conditions (U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), 2019). When left untreated, these behavioral health conditions can cause other health complications, such as drug overdoses—which can raise health care costs (GAO, 2019). According to Insel (2011), it is not easy to pin down the economic costs of mental illness.
Untreated mental health conditions not only result in increased patient costs but also affect health care providers. Daily in practice, I witness firsthand the effect of untreated mental health conditions and rising mental healthcare costs. I encounter individuals that cannot afford to meet the minimum payments due for services nor cover the price of medication copays. Many of these individuals live on a fixed income which barely meets the expenses of daily living. There is barely enough left for other purposes when you factor in mental and medical healthcare costs.
The facility where I am employed offers a sliding scale fee for services rendered. The sliding scale fee offsets some of the expenses for care rendered, but it is not enough. The organization is not a state-run facility, but it operates on state-funded programs. To assist with the costs of medication, many clients are grant recipients. For example, the community program in which I am a part is a grant-funded treatment service for individuals with severe mental illness and who have financial difficulties coming to the clinic. We provide service to clients at their residence to offset a portion of the expenses associated with travel and work. As The Commonwealth Fund (2020) states, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) has improved mental health care access, but the remaining gaps require further attention.
