This programs focus mostly on helping individuals to develop knowledge and skills, they also help individuals change their environment and commuity factors that affect a large population. The programs can also be implemented in schools, workplaces and communities. The prevention efforts are dividend intho the following thre categories; universal preventive intervention which reaches an entire population to prevent substance use disorders, selective preventieve interventions which targets subgroups of the population that are at risk for substane use diorders and the last one would be indicated preventive intervention, which aims at individuals who are exhibiting early signs of having a substance use disorder though they have not been diagnosed. Most of the substance use disorder prevention programs and early intervention focus on children and adolescents. The reason for this is because given that substance misuse early in life increases chances and individual will develop SUD.
