Frankenstein the True Monster

Frankenstein is an unusually “unstable” novel in the sense that there are many ways to interpret the relationship between Frankenstein and the Monster. Is Frankenstein an “artist” and the Monster his “creation”? Is Frankenstein a “Father” and the Monster his “Son”? Is Frankenstein a “Mother” and the Monster a “Daughter,” which is to say Mary Shelley herself? Or, is Frankenstein the Monster—is the Monster a projection of some “split off” part of Frankenstein himself? For this essay, give an account of the novel from within one of these frameworks. This will entail finding evidence in the form of quotations that support and develop your reading. Remember, quotation always includes analysis of its meaning in relation to your overall argument. Each quote has to work in this way—otherwise it isn’t pulling the weight it needs to have in your essay.
