2 peers responses (75 words total) Post 1 (35 words) It is very important that educators operationally define a target behaviors before conducting a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA).
The cause behind this is simple, the operational definition is designed to be observable, measurable, objective, and specific. This makes it clear to collect data on the student. It also helps to justify when and how often the behavior does occurs. After doing these steps educators are able to pick the right intervention along with providing the right services for the student.
Defining behavior is essential to effective instruction. Being able to define behavior helps make the learning process more likely to be successful(pro.psychcentral.com).
Example a student does not pay attention in the classroom, which is the target behavior. After conducting an operational definition of the target behavior, the student is constantly looking around the room, staring at students around the room, or stares at his desk.
The replacement behavior would be for the student to pay attention in class. The goal is to have the student to look at the teacher give verbal responding when the teacher is speaking.

Data collection procedures include interviews, observations, assessments, group conversations, and documents.
Collecting data in the listed basic types of data collection procedures, help educators to be more efficient in their teaching because they give them a better idea of what levels students are on, the useful methods that they can use to assist their students, and provide a safe learning environment. Student behavior issues have the potential to impede on the learning environments that we create for our students.
Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) is a method of identifying and collecting data in regards to the patterns observed and noted (CBIS World, nd).FBA serves as a visual guideline that helps educators identify causes and characteristics of the behavior.
Positive Behavior Supports (PBS) are methods to assist students in their journey of using acceptable behavior. PBS can be used in the form of posters with classroom rules and expectations.
This visual display of the expectations provides additional support for the students that need the reminder. This is why it is important to collect data beforehand to better prepare for ALL students learning in our classrooms.
When educators use data collection procedures in relation to FBA and PBS, they have the potential to make a difference in the behaviors displayed in their classrooms and the efficiency of the learning environment.
