Growth of Cities
Describe the effects of the growth of cities during the nineteenth century and early twentieth century on the environment of America. Additionally, how were those cities and their populations were related to the rest of the world from the mid-nineteenth century until the 1950s? An acceptable essay will utilize extensively the latter chapters from Steinbergs Down to Earth, summarizing information that Steinberg presented. You will find little information in the lectures which intentionally have focused elsewhere. Note the emphasized words/concepts; responses to these words/concepts should be the focus of the essay. The essay will be evaluated on how well the answer responds to these highlighted elements. Include a heading: your name, class title with course number, instructors name, and date. Include a title for the essay. Include page numbers. Double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12 font, 1-inch margins (Includes heading, body, and footnotes). Do not use contractions. However should never be the first word in a sentence. Avoid the passive voice. After writing out a persons full name, refer to that person by their last name only (i.e. Henry David Thoreau is Thoreau and never Henry). Only use the 3rd Do not use first or second person pronouns or modifiers/adjectives/possessives. Citations must be used to cite any idea referenced/used other than your own. Thus, paraphrases and quotations should be noted. Have a clear, descriptive thesis statement. (E.g., Do not open with broad, overarching observations.) The thesis should be in bold font. Explain your statements and assertions. Pack each sentence with thought and evidence.
