Growth Supplements
Should we be concerned about the use of growth supplements or antibiotics in food animals? Are there risks associated with the use of these products for humans? This is a major controversy, in the world today. There are many different views on the topic and both sides have some solid points. How would you address this topic with a member of the general public or for several of you, students in the classroom. One of the major challenges that the animal science industry faces today is a “failure to communicate”. We do not always clearly share or explain our reasons for certain practices or we are afraid to answer questions at times. We need to move past that and practicing how to answer the tough questions helps. A good example of our failure to communicate is rBST. When it first came out in the late 90’s for use in dairy cattle, no explanations were given on why or how it worked or if any evidence of human impacts were possible or even tested. The result was a huge backlash from the public that has effectively ended the widespread use of rBST in the dairy industry currently. I want to see your thoughts and concerns on this topic, how would you answer questions from the public and so forth. It is very likely that not everyone in this group will have the same views and that is fine. I am only looking for you to explain your view and provide some evidence that supports your statements. I am looking for 4 pages two pages on the risks of antibiotics and the other two on are they sustainable for continued uselink to a popular press article: https://www.usnews.com/news/articles/2015/11/16/pediatricians-warn-of-antibiotic-danger-in-meat
