Historical Reflection

Directions: Reflect upon the assigned chapter or chapters assigned for this week, lecture, and required and/or recommended websites and documentaries.  Create a two-part response typed in 12-point font, double-spaced.  Include your name and week number at the top of the first page.  Cite three key points or “gold nuggets” from this week’s unit / content.  You may include examples from the textbook chapter, lecture, and required and recommend websites.  Keep quoted content to less than 20% of the total reflection according to the Turnitin report. Part One: Select three sentences from this week’s resources (chapter, lecture, websites) that stand out to you because they surprised you, made you think about the topic in an unexpected way, were profound, or otherwise struck you as being worthy of repetition and deserving of reflection.  We will consider these sentences to be “gold nuggets.” Quote each golden sentence, providing a page number, or title of lecture or website, and explain in several sentences why you consider the statement to be a gold nugget.  Be sure to consider how the historical context influences the significance of topic. Part Two: This second part involves offering an interpretation and analysis of a guiding question.  In your response, provide a thesis statement that captures your interpretation.  Support your interpretation with detailed evidence. This should be three paragraphs in length.  (Approximately five to seven sentences each paragraph). Sample Format:                                                                                                                                     Your name                                                                                                             Historical  Reflection 1 Part One: “Quoted example/ gold nugget,” (citation or reference). Your reflection on the significance of this statement. “Quoted example/ gold nugget,” (citation or reference). Your reflection on the significance of this statement. “Quoted example/ gold nugget,” (citation or reference). Your reflection on the significance of this statement.   Example of a “gold nugget” reflection: “In addition to her activities as translator, negotiator, and lecturer, she (Sarah Winnemucca) create a short-lived bilingual school to offer Paiute children an education that would respect their own culture.”  (TWE, pp. 362-63).  This passage summarizes the profound accomplishments Sarah Winnemucca achieved during her short life in the late nineteenth-century. As a Paiute woman, she was born right on the cusp and in the path of invasion from the East.  Against tremendous forces she exercised agency to determine her path in life.  In doing so, she secured a return of Paiute to Nevada, published an autobiography, and established an industrial school that was far more sensitive to the cultural needs of Paiute children than the Bureau of Indian Affairs schools were. The photograph on page 361 of TWE shows how the BIA schools attempted to erase Native cultural through forced assimilation. Part Two:             Prepare a three-paragraph response to the key question.  Support your interpretation with specific evidence from the week’s historical sources.  Prepare a minimum of three paragraphs responding to this question. (Keep in mind that paragraphs generally consist of five to seven paragraphs).  Evaluation Criteria: Your HR assignment will be evaluated according to the following rubric.  Please note that there are not accurate or inaccurate responses for this assignment.  It is designed to encourage your own reflection and critical thinking (both analysis and synthesis) about our course topics.  18 – 20 (A):  Excellent response.  Part One was clear and specific.  The three gold nugget reflections demonstrate analysis of significance within the historical context.  Part Two begins with a strong, analytical thesis statement or argument.  It solidly addresses the topic and expresses an understanding of the issues and their significance or importance; presents valid evidence that supports the thesis in a convincing manner; and is convincing.  Writing is clear, detailed, and free of all but very minor errors.  Followed directions and cites specific examples.  Includes three or more paragraphs in part two.  Less than 20% of the document is quoted according to Turnitin report.   16 – 17 (B): Strong response.  Part One demonstrates analysis of significance and consideration of the influence of the historical context. Part Two begins with a clear thesis and addresses the topic clearly, although a few points may benefit from clarification or elaboration.  Evidence is accurately and clearly presented.  Includes two – three solid paragraphs.  Overall, both sections were clearly written using complete sentences. Some clarification may have been needed. References were provided for evidence.  Followed directions and provided specific examples. Less than 20% of content is quoted according to Turnitin report. 14 – 15 (C):  Part One reveals analysis of significance and consideration of the historical context.  May benefit from more detailed and in-depth reflection.  Part Two addresses the topic with a clear thesis. Supporting evidence is accurately presented in two or more paragraphs.  Overall, writing is clear, although it may benefit from clarifications and/or elaboration.  Followed directions and cited specific examples. Over 20, but less than 30% of content may be quoted according to Turnitin report. 13 and Below (D/F):  Did not satisfactorily complete one or both sections.  Not all requirements of the assignment were satisfied.  More editing and clarification may be needed.  Missing references and citations for evidence introduced.   Directions may not have been followed.  Exceeds 30% or quoted material and / or includes uncited and quoted passages.  0: Historical Reflection includes uncited content and/or excessive similarity matches according to the generated Turnitin report. Provide citations for quoted passages in part one.  Here’s how: For references, provide a parenthetical (Elusive Eden, 13).  I will be very flexible about how you cite the sources as long as you limit your use of quoted sources to the textbook, lecture, linked documentaries, and websites for our learning unit AND the Turnitin report indicates that less than 20% of your Historical Reflection is quoted.  This activity is designed for you to identify important “gold nuggets” and develop interpretations supported by relevant historical evidence. From the textbook: (Through Women’s Eyes, 135).  Or (TWE, 135). (Elusive Eden, 141).  Or, (EE, 141). Lecture: Professor’s Name, “Title of Lecture” (lecture presented online for Class, Semester).  Example:  Leonhardt, “Bear Flag Revolt” California History 340, spring 2020. Documentary: Producer, year. Title of Documentary. Foreigners in Their Own Land (1565-1880): the    Latino Americans. Or at the very least, the title of the documentary.  Website: A citation to website content can often be limited to the title.  (I’d appreciate the url).             Bidwell Mansion State Historic Park.  CA.GOV.  Accessed 3/18/20. For Part II, prepare a three-paragraph response to this key question: Based upon the evidence examined this week, did WW II unleash permanent liberating changes for women, or did the post-war period bring about a loss of war-time gains and opportunities?  Consider our nation’s diverse population of women as you develop a three-paragraph response.    Support your interpretation with specific evidence from this week’s historical sources.  Keep quoted content to less than 20% of your response.  Prepare a minimum of three paragraphs responding to this question. (Keep in mind that paragraphs generally consist of five to seven paragraphs).
