How can The Break by Katharena Vermette
Write an argumentative research paper of 7-8 pages on a topic for which you must do research and textual analysis of The Break in order to support your claim. Use MLA documentation style (page numbers cited parenthetically in text, works cited page, 12 pt. font, 250 words per page, double-spaced). Use of Sources : Be sure to cite (quote/paraphrase/summarize) the primary text/source as needed to support your argument. In your paper you are also required to quote, paraphrase, or summarize (cite) from 2 academic sources (this is a minimum; they should be peer-reviewed articles and/or academic books* on literary criticism or a topic related to your research question). I will be assessing how deeply you understand the critical conversation surrounding your chosen topic by: a. The relevance of the secondary sources you choose. b. How effectively you integrate and comment on the quotations, paraphrases, and summaries of your chosen sources. Use these secondary source citations as corroborating evidence for your interpretative points, which are supported by your own analysis of the primary source. c. How meaningfully you assess/evaluate the arguments of these other scholars. Your Audience: professional scholars who are not Morrison or Vermette specialists. Assume your audience knows the text about which you are writing already, so you do not need to summarize the plot. However, do not assume your readers have read a particular scholarly work (thus you must quote, paraphrase, summarize as needed). Your Purpose: present an interesting claim or argument in your paper. In crafting an argument, please focus on between two to four specific passages from The Break to closely read and mine for evidence. You may reference other parts of the text, but be sure to have two to four main passages whose content (WHAT they are about) style and form (HOW they are written), serve to support your argument or claim.
