Bar code medication administration (BCMA) system technology is an electronic scanning application that captures medication errors during drug administration. BCMA uses barcodes to avoid human errors when distributing prescribed drugs in hospitals (Naidu & Alicia, 2019). Medication errors occur during ordering of medication, drug administration, transcription, and dispensing. Over 30% of medication errors occur during drug administration. The goal of BCMA is to ensure that patients receive the right medications at the right time by electronically confirming and documenting the drugs (Naidu & Alicia, 2019). The purpose of this paper is to discuss the components of BCMA and the steps involved in BCMA.

Components of Bar Code Administration System Technology
The barcoded medication administration (BCMA) technology entails several hardware and software components. They include a barcode printing system for wristbands and drug packages in the pharmacy, portable barcode scanners that are interfaced to computers positioned near a patient, and a wireless communication network that connects the portable bedside computers to a centralized application system or computer server (Jimenez, 2017). The barcodes may be linear, that is 1-D, two-dimensional 2-D, or composite, which combines 1-D and 2-D elements. In addition, there are software applications that run on the computer server that process incoming data and return the data to bedside computers (Jimenez, 2017). An interface is a software component that facilitates communication between the central server or software and other hospital databases, including the admission discharge transfer system and the pharmacy information system.
Bar Code Medication Administration Systems
Types of BMAS include Meditech and Epic. Meditech provides an administrative review of the medication administration record activity by monitoring reports and auditing pharmacy prescriptions (Tyas, 2018). This ensures that healthcare providers comply with BMCA and reduce medication errors. Epic is a leading electronic health record system that enables health providers to document and conduct barcode confirmation at the patient’s bedside (Tyas, 2018). It also supports BCMA using a barcode scanner to allow for identification of the patient, clinician, and medication.

Steps Involved in Bar Code Medication Administration
BCMA starts with labeling of each drug in a hospital with a unique barcode. When a drug is prescribed to a patient, it is conveyed, sent electronically, or manually delivered to the pharmacy and entered into the computer system by the dispensing pharmacist (Tyas, 2018). The pharmacist then dispenses the barcoded drug dosage to the patient’s hospital unit. At the inpatient unit, the next step of BCMA occurs at the patient’s bedside. It involves a nurse scanning his or her employee ID barcode, and the barcode on a patient’s wristband to confirm that it is the right patient (Shah et al., 2016). The nurse then scans the barcode on each drug package to verify that it is the right drug, administered at the right time and via the right route. This ensures that the “Five Rights of Drug Administration” are observed (Shah et al., 2016). If the BCCMA system codes do not match the medication to be administered with the drug order in the system, the nurse is alerted via a visual warning.
