In the Blood
Directly paraphrased from my Professor:These assignments are not meant to be formal essays; you do not have to present and develop a fully-fledged argument. In fact, do not bother with introductions or summaries or author biographies or any other space-wasting writing. I want to see you practice interpreting the text. In general, I will evaluate you based on how well you:(a) say something interpretive about the specific details of a text (i.e. close reading): you should think critically about the significance of the language, diction, images, motifs, and/or structure that the author uses in the passage youre talking about. You should always be quoting from, citing, and analyzing the text. (b) try to do some creative and critical thinkingClose Reading Prompt: Analyze how In the Blood engages with or otherwise represents some of the conventions of traditional tragedy or some of the big questions/preoccupations of the tragic genre. What are one or two conventions of tragic drama or questions that the genre ponders, and how does Parks include them or respond to them in the way she builds her play? Be sure to pick details from the play to discuss closely. You might also want to think about the effect of Parks wrestling with conventional tragedy. Why would a 20th-century African-American woman want to deal with a form that is usually associated with dead white men? This assignment should be 2 pages long.
