Getting Started

As a social worker, you are at the forefront of social consequences and social realities. Every day, social workers experience policies that promote human potential and social sustainability, but, unfortunately, they also encounter policies that increase the inequality that exists in society. In this assignment, you will explore how social workers can contribute to a reduction of economic and political inequality by addressing existing disadvantages that affect how people participate in society.

Upon successful completion of this assignment, you will be able to:

Background Information

In the video, Rich Benjamin leads you through three different “Whitopia” communities. He uses humor to talk about issues that cause us great distress. He reveals how we can have racism without racists. Are we as racially and educationally segregated as it would appear? Do you think policy promotes this divide? As America became more and more multicultural, Benjamin noticed a phenomenon: some communities were actually getting less diverse. So he got out a map, found the whitest towns in the USA—and moved in. In this funny, honest, human talk, he shares what he learned as a black man in Whitopia.
