You are the leader of an interprofessional team who is reviewing a chest tube care protocol to determine if evidence-based best practices are being followed. As you meet with the group for the first time, you provide opportunities for group members to get to know each other. In this meeting, you also set out to determine the goals of the project and assign roles and responsibilities of each member of the team. As the group is discussing who will be responsible for each of the tasks, Joel responds in a curt manner that he feels that he would do a better job with the task assigned to Mary than she would be able to do. Using a calm tone, Mary provides an explanation of her capabilities to perform the task effectively, given her experience with this task on another project. You agree with the decision to have Mary perform the task. Joel seems to be agitated by the decision, and he throws his hands up in the air, gets up from his seat, and leaves the room.
