Chapter 3 of Law for Nurse Leaders begins with clearly pointing out that as nursing roles have expanded, they are characterized by greater autonomy & independence. Because of this, nurses are increasingly subject to examination of their practice, especially when patient outcomes are not favorable. Malpractice, negligence, & liability can result. Poor communication has been found to contribute to such issues.Discussion1. Carefully read chapter 3 with attention on legal terminology, case studies, & references cited throughout. What specific areas of the chapter did you find most interesting? What parts of the chapter were new to you? Most surprising? What value do you see in the Rothman Index? How do negligence, malpractice, & liability compare to accountability of nurses in other countries? (Cite at least two countries in this response.2. Examine the four case studies presented in chapter 3. What do the cases have in common? What are major differences? What elements of negligence do you see in each one? How do the first three provisions of the Code of Ethics for Nurses relate to these cases? Discuss several specific strategies to prevent professional negligence. Indicate how a nursing leader might integrate these strategies into unit standards.
