M Butterfly by David Henry Hwang

In David Henry Hwangs M. Butterfly, Rene Gallimard learns the difference between fantasy and reality but consciously chooses fantasy and death in the manner of Puccinis Madame Butterfly. Thus, Hwang flip-flops who the tragic character is, such that Gallimard, who thinks of himself as the macho Pinkerton, is the one abandoned and disgraced in the end. Such gender inversions take place throughout the play. Choose at least two examples of the subjectivity or mutability of gender and analyze its implications in the world of the play.
