problem with intermittent acute exacerbations since the 1930s. What effects at both macro level (e.g. public opinion, social policy) and micro level (e.g. individual schools, courses) has this had on nursing education? Has the net balance of positive and negative effects been beneficial for nursing education? Why?
Debate the wisdom and feasibility of setting the masters degree as the minimum marker for the professional segment of the nursing continuum. Given the 20/20 hindsight gained from the debacle of the 1965 Position Paper, how would you advise national nursing organizations to go about changing this definition, if it were to be changed?
Analyze how the triangulation of subject, setting, and student characteristics serve to frame curriculum planning and development.
Conduct a literature search on the history and evolution of nursing curricula. Summarize the key aspects of the scholarly article, and speculate on how past and present events will frame the future.

Introduction to Curriculum Development in Nursing Education
Module 1 provides an introduction to curriculum, including a brief comparison of traditional versus interactive and innovative types of curricula. Curriculum will be defined according to several authors, and curriculum components are reviewed. The discussion of curriculum changes briefly describes the process, barriers, and facilitators of change in curriculum development. The impact of social, economic, and technological forces will also be addressed.

Summary:
Curriculum development in nursing education is a creative process intended to produce a unified, meaningful curriculum. Faculty and other stakeholders undertake curriculum development with a goal of preparing graduates who will practice nursing competently in a constantly changing healthcare environment. It is an ongoing activity in nursing education, even in schools of nursing with established curricula. The extent of the development ranges from regular refinement of class activities and assignments to the creation of a completely original and reconceptualized curriculum. This module began with definitions and conceptualizations of curriculum and curriculum development in nursing education. A summary of the major aspects of the curriculum development provided, serving as a foundation for the forthcoming modules. Additionally, attention was given to some of the interpersonal issues that can influence the curriculum development team, and hence, the completed work. As we will see in the upcoming module, successful curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation are contingent on dedicated participants whose efforts are valued and who are supported during the process.
As part of the nursing culture and as required at Aspen University, you should be building a portfolio.
