Curriculum Development and Evaluation in Staff Development and Patient Education
Module 7 describes the role of the nursing educator in staff development and health education services for clients. Many of the same activities that relate to curriculum development and evaluation in the academic setting also apply to practice settings. This module helps staff developers and health educators adapt the concepts to their area of nursing practice. Lastly, this module concludes with an analysis of the current role of educators in nursing practice settings. Implications for the future and the potential partnerships between practice and schools of nursing will be explored.

Summary:
The two major roles of nurse educators in the practice setting for staff development and client-centered health education were reviewed. The adaptation of a needs assessment and the curriculum’s components to the development of staff and health education programs were summarized and compared to those in the development of nursing education programs. Learning theories applied to staff development and health education and to teaching strategies were reviewed. Evaluation methodologies in staff development and health education, including regulation, accreditation, standard of practice, and total quality management, were discussed. Cost effectiveness, and important aspect to educational programs in health care systems, and guidelines for developing budgets were outlined. Lastly, major issues facing education in the practice setting were examined and trends for the future were analyzed.
