The Impact of Arthritis in the United States
Arthritis is commonly associated with people over the age of 65, according to the majority of people. The stiff, inflamed joints and nagging aches and pains are simply seen as byproducts of aging and years of wear and tear on the body. While arthritis is a health condition that causes chronic pain due to joint inflammation, it is not only a condition that affects the elderly. Children, teenagers, and even adults in their twenties and thirties can develop arthritis. As a long-term care nurse for over 15 years, I am well-versed in the effects of arthritis in patients living in long-term care (LTC) facility settings. Residents with chronic arthritis have a difficult time
NR Week 6 Evaluation of an Epidemiological Disease or Problem
lifting items, opening doors, walking long distances, and performing activities of daily living (ADL) such as bathing, dressing, using the toilet, eating, transferring to or from the bed or chair, or generally participating in activities that require strength and flexibility. Millions of people with arthritis do not live in LTC facilities, so they do not have nursing assistance to assist them with ADLs or instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) such as housework, grocery shopping, driving, caring for pets, and so on. Millions of arthritis patients, on the other hand, are forced to give up their independence and move into long-term care facilities every year because they are no longer able to perform normal daily functions due to the pain and discomfort caused by their arthritis.
According to the Georgia Department of Public Health (GDPH), arthritis is the leading cause of disability in the United States and Georgia, affecting over 53 million people (Bayakly, 2015). In 2013, one in every four adults in Georgia, ranging in age from 18 to 85, was diagnosed with arthritis by their primary care physician (Bayakly, 2015). With the average age of onset arthritis reported to be 47 years old, cost-effective evidence-based strategies for treating arthritis in LTC patients are required (Tavakoli, Akwara, Kish, 2018). This paper will look at the prevalence of osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA), as well as their causes. The paper will also cover surveillance methods, an epidemiology analysis of OA and RA, and how they are diagnosed. Finally, as a family nurse practitioner, this paper will consider what actions can be taken to address OA and RA.
