Public Communication
This assignment offers you the opportunity to produce a dual-authored case study of the public communication practices of an institution, organization, corporation, activist/advocacy/community/lobbyist group, politician, or public figure. Discussion is limited to 1-2 communication technologies or channels (e.g., TikTok, mailing list, YouTube, Twitter) used by your selected object of study. You will draw upon different sources (academic, historical, contemporary, and popular press) to analyze how communication technology assists, undermines, and/or neutralizes the efforts of your case study example. In presenting a coherent overview of the communication activities of the latter, you will be better able to examine and contextualize how these efforts to communicate publicly bring to light issues surrounding power, access/ibility, race, gender, labour, privacy, and surveillance, among others.
