Schizophrenia
Discussion: Diane Previous Next Diane is a 20 year old with Schizophrenia and mild ID. She lives at New Horizons Residential Homes with full time staff and 2 other women. She works at a local restaurant with the support of a job coach from Vision Vocational Program.
Diane’s mother Herta raised Diane alone and the two were very close. It broke her heart when at 16 Diane became quite ill and required 24 supports. Herta couldn’t manage and struggled as her daughter was placed in the group home. She fusses over Diane and still sees her as a little girl. Diane still requires a lot of support but has stabilized and does well speaking for herself.
She resents her mother for speaking over her, disregarding her wishes and treating her like a child. During the annual planning meeting Herta is upset that Diane wants a boyfriend and increased independence in the community. She wants Diane supervised at all times and nowhere near sex crazed men.
The staff feel Diane could start going to a local mall for an hour unsupervised and maybe have a 30-minute home alone plan. Herta is interrupting Diane and telling her she is too vulnerable. Diane is starting to cry. Diane is legally her own decision maker. Her mental health worker, vocational staff, and 3 key residential support staff are all at the meeting. How can you handle this situation without alienating the mother, but yet respecting Dianes autonomy and wishes?
As the leader everyone is looking at you to handle the situation. Directions: Address the question above in a discussion post with your peers. Then respond to another students post.
