Social Control and Deviance
For this week, you read about social control and deviance. I would like you to break a social norm for at least 30 minutes. You can do this in a number of ways. Here are some options:1. Wear flip flops if it’s very cold out/wear a winter coat if it’s warm out.2. Wear stripes with polka dots or some other fashion mix-up.3. Have a conversation with friends. Roll your eyes while they talk, talk over them, play with your phone and ignore them.4. Have a meal with a friend or family member. Chew with your mouth open, don’t use table manners, etc. These are just some options. If you’d like to do something else, feel free. The whole point is to break a ‘norm’ that we have in society. When you have finished the experiment, write a brief paragraph about the experience. Answer the following questions:1. Did you receive sanctions? Were there subtle punishments for breaking the norm? How does conforming to norms (and violating them) fit into the socialization process?PreviousNext
