1. Categorize each statement in the case according to the supportive communication principle it represents (e.g., disjunctive, owned, global, invalidating, etc.). For example, the first statement by Leonardo is not very congruent. Also, when you cite principle #8, do not simply state supportive listening. Indicate if the listening response uses reflecting, probing, deflecting, or advising. Furthermore, provide a rationale for your assessment of each statement. For instance, why do you think statement Leonards first statement is incongruent? Please number each item of dialogue. This will improve our class discussion because we will be able to reference parts of the case in a way that all will understand. For example, Susette’s first comments should be number “1”, Leonardo’s response should be numbered “2”, Susette’s response should be numbered”3″, and so on.
2. Which statements in the conversation were most helpful? Which statements were least helpful, or could have produced defensiveness or closed off the conversation? Provide your reasoning for why you think certain statements were helpful or non-helpful.
3.If you were the coach of Susette, how would you assist her in being more competent as a supportive communicator? How would you coach Leonardo to be more supportive even though it is he who faces the problem?
4. Assess the flow of the communication in terms of the principles of supporting listening (pp. 256-260). How did Susette do?
