Historiography is the study of the writing of history and its interpretations over time. You are the historian now and you will assess the administrations of Andrew Jackson and his impact on the US.
Jacksonian America Assignment
We have entered the age of intense campaigning to the masses. All sorts of methods came into play. Presidential campaigns especially became entertainment with newspaper and magazine articles and advertisements, stunts, endorsements, signs, stump speeches, rallies, jingles, songs, and food and alcoholic beverages (hard cider came to symbolize the common man)
Step 1:
Think about this question: So how do you categorize Jackson? What motivated him? What was his ideology? Were there contradictions? See Images as History on pages 244 and 245. Do you support Old Hickory or King Andrew?
Make sure you know what side you are on and why Jackson is viewed each way. A true historical assessment is not an one issue approach.
Step 2: After choosing your position, create a campaign slogan (something that will fit on a bumper sticker) that supports your opinion. Try to keep in mind the impact (good or bad) that Jacksons policies had on the historical development of the nation. You are limited to 10 words.
*You can use the biography.com sources as well the lectures and textbook.
Step 3: Once you have created your bumper sticker slogan, name the type of car that you would imagine Jackson driving (if he was alive today) if he was Cruisin the Coast. Your choice of car will reflect your position on Jacksons record as president. Explain your choice of car and slogan based on your assessment of his presidency in 5 sentences.
*Grading will be based on creativity, clarity of message, and your ability to capture the historical significance of the Jacksonian era.
