Ethos : Rothman elaborates the idea that although many are dedicating themselves to social justice, in the hands of an influential set of activists, social justice has turns poisonous (4).
Noah Rothman’s book, Unjust, has a very important goal: to persuade the reading audience to consider how unjust many social justice movements are; similarly, Robert Reich’s documentary seeks to persuade its audience that inequality is at the heart of our present economic situation. The goal of this essay is to analyze certain points of the book’s and documentary’s rhetoric to determine the degree of persuasion to which each of these texts attains.
Below is the main prompt:
Write a minimum 4-page essay that examines certain points of rhetoric in both Rothman’s and Reich’s texts. Rhetoric is defined as the art of persuasion. To persuade an audience, writers and documentary producers use different types of language, image, and sound strategies. In this essay, you are asked to track various moments of rhetoric from the book and the documentary and to explain what each point attempts to appeal to in the audiences emotions and/or reason. Finally, your analysis should argue the degree of effectiveness of these points of rhetoric in gaining audience approval. |
