Week 10 Monopolistic Competition and Advertising
- Who was your partner for this weeks reflection? I WORKED ALONE
- Each of you divide by looking at advertising based on two distinct industries. For example, one would look at advertising on cars while the other will look at advertising on fashion.Once you have decided that, each of you will need to look at advertising from two rivals.(Example:GM vs. Ford or Polo vs. Tommy Hilfiger)Which one of the two industries and rivals associated with it did you watch advertising on?
- When looking at the advertising for each, do you think that one rivals advertising was significantly superior to the other? Thus, they are more likely to gain more market share over the other.Compare your thoughts with your partner. Was it similar or different?Did you both end up agreeing on the advertising of the four companies or not?
- Read Clear It Up: How does advertising impact monopolistic competition? in Section 10.1 of the textbook.Do you agree with economist A.C. Pigou or not?Explain your rationale.
- After coming up with the list, consider Question #28 under Critical Thinking and determine whether intellectual property laws might hinder innovation in some cases. If not, explain why you think it is important in all cases.
