I need help with a Writing question. All explanations and answers will be used to help me learn.
The three most important events that have influenced current middle school teaching practices are the implementation of Common Core, the use of technology, and the rise in PBIS. The three events have altered how the teachers teach, as well as how the students learn.
Common Core has rolled out and it did not have a smooth introduction to education. There was a lot of push back with the whole integration, as expected. Change in education is never easy and Common Core was a huge change. The idea that students will not bubble, but be expected to rationalize and explain in writing how they got their answer was a big shift in mindset for the student, teacher, and parents. The frustration levels were high at first, but as the years have gone by and professional development has rolled out, we see some great work being done with Common Core. Teachers across the nation could work together to develop creative and engaging integrated lessons and units to share using cutting edge technology and e-tools (AMLE)Common Core has opened the doors to more collaboration and the use of next big event – technology.
Technology has exploded and we, as educators, are trying to figure it out. Technology keeps changing and giving educators, students, and parents new ways to learn or use the technology as a resource with learning. The issue we see is the adults, who have always been the most knowledgeable, are no longer the smartest with technology and this learning curve is tough. The mindset with technology and students is embracing how we can learn together and owning up to not always knowing everything – big change in mindset. There’s no question students today live in a different world than most of us grew up in. Stats put their media activity (surfing online, playing video games, text messaging their friends, and, yes, even reading) at 6.5 hours a day. And that’s outside of the time they spend in school each day (Wired Up). This is vastly different from playing outside until the street lights came on.
The last big event is PBIS. For many years the discussion of how we are not able to discuss character, but only curriculum, was big. It has now come back around that teaching characteristics is not only important, but vital to our students. Home lives are different – many working parents who dont get a chance to parent as much as wed like, so it comes to the teacher to reinforce (and sometimes teach) these characteristics that will make our students a well-rounded individual. Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4).
