In today’s society, technology has become a primary way of looking for a job and it would be beneficial to start in the popular sites such as indeed. Using sites such as that will be able to provide some information for possible job openings but as a dental hygienist’s there is more that goes into actually getting the job. A dental hygienist commonly will have to do a working interview to demonstrate the skill set. As a temporary hygienist, I was able to establish a good relationship with offices I have worked at which have opened up future opportunities through word of mouth. Keeping an up to date resume is also an important thing to remember when looking for a job.

Another way to look for new jobs is the old fashioned way of delivering your resume to offices around your area and getting your name out there in case there are any future openings. I have heard of colleagues of mine finding jobs this way because it allows for a friendly face to the resume.

I am going to begin my job search by looking for a job in nursing home administration. I typed in Google search for nursing home administration job Pinellas county. I filter my search by pay rate, and experience needed. I had a pretty good return on jobs available by indeed.com. This is pretty exciting because the list of posts was current and was no older than 16 days. This gives me a lot of hope that after completing the HAS program, I will be able to find employment in the field I am looking for. I didn’t experience any issues with my search and had immediate returns on my search. The website had direct links to email my resume for the job. The resources for finding a job have become much easier with the internet than in the past. I n the past, I would have to drive to facilities to see if they were hiring. The internet opens many doors for finding new opportunities in the workforce.

When looking at the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) it is very informative as well as interesting on the many classifications, disorders, conditions, etc.… that can be found within the mental health field. One of the strengths of the DSM is that it gives a semi precise definition of different mental disorders such as symptoms and signs of different disorders. By giving a singular resource for providers to reference is crucial, seeing as providers cannot remember every single mental disorder as well as their signs and symptoms. By having a guide and resources reference can ensure that patients are receiving correct information and diagnoses (Fritscher, 2019). While the DSM has many strengths and provides a lot of information in one central location, the DSM also has weaknesses. One of the weaknesses of the DSM is that some providers may misdiagnose a patient based off the DSM. While having the DSM as a useful reference to look to when working with a patient through their signs and symptoms. It is important to remember that not all mental disorders can fit into a nice little box as outlined in the DSM. While providers can use the DSM as a reference and fall back for information, it is also important to gather feedback as well as a back history for the patient before diagnosing any condition (Fritscher, 2019). In 2013 a new edition of the DSM was released, which was the 5^th edition, when releasing the 5^th edition of the DSM there were some notable changes from the DSM 4^th edition to the DSM 5^th edition. The one change that could help with a weakness of the DSM is the removal of the multi-axial system. The multi-axial system classified different disorders and conditions into classifications on axis 1-5. By removing the axial system it will be difficult for providers to be able to easily classify as well as billing. On the positive side it will distribute the conditions more so and not combine similar disorders on to the same axis (SAMHSA, 2019).

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) gives practitioners a way to gather information on diagnosis, with the accompanied behaviors, and allows for universal care to help patients receive the best care (Summers, 2015). Through this manual, physicians are able to have a common language to allow for more consistency and accuracy; however, DSM IV needed some corrections to ensure clarification on specific disorders to allow the manual to do the job efficiently.

A strength of the DSM is that it allows for a universal language for practitioners to ensure proper care for their patients. I also believe it is a strength that they continued to update this manual to ensure the best results.

One weakness that DSM IV had was the Global Assessment of Functioning, which was for scoring of disorders (NCBI, 2016). As DSM IV was changed to DSM V, the Global Assessment of Functioning was removed because of the confusion it had caused, defeating the purpose of this manual. Due to the lack of clarification on conditions, disabilities, and explanations, this was taken away to allow for more development and understanding within DSM V (NCBI, 2016). To correct this, the DSM V created classes to help regroup the disorders to allow a more effective understanding of the manual (NCBI, 2016). With this change, DSM V was able to reorganize and develop types of disorders to encourage more clarity. According to NCBI, the DSM V had four classes eliminated and added six different classes. For example, mood disorders were changed to two classes; bipolar and related disorders, and depressive disorders (NCBI, 2016). This created classifications to be reidentified and allowed for more in depth disorder types and accuracy.
