Final Project: Putting It All into Perspective

Throughout this course, we have focused on the importance of social responsibility and civic engagement. This has been done by looking at these issues through the lens of history. In this assignment, you will have a chance to lend your own insights into how others have become civically engaged.

Below, you will find a number of references to moments in American (and world) history when people stood up for the rights of others and got involved. Identify an event that resonates with you and research the episode.

  • Campaigns for and/or against voting and equal rights for women (e.g. Susan B. Anthony, Alice Paul, Woodrow Wilson, Gloria Steinem, Phyllis Schlafly)
  • Campaigns for and/or against civil rights for African Americans (e.g. Martin Luther King, Jr., Fannie Lou Hamer, Ida B.Wells, George Wallace, David Duke)
  • Campaigns for and/or against Congressional representation and voting rights for residents of Washington, D.C.
  • Advocacy groups for and/or against Native Americans, the elderly, the disabled, gay men and lesbians, farm workers, neo-Nazis, the homeless
  • Issue-related initiatives such as school desegregation, abortion, gun ownership, apartheid, drug legalization, states’ rights, nuclear power, economic globalization
  • Race-related incidents that resulted in violence, from Selma or Watts in the 1960s to Cincinnati in 2001
  • Ethnic cleansing and genocidal warfare in Rwanda, Bosnia, or Sudan
  • International activists such as Mahatma Gandhi in India, Rigoberta Menchú in Guatemala, Aung San Suu Kyi in Burma, Patrice Lumumba in Zaire, Nelson Mandela in South Africa, Lech Walesa in Poland
  • Pro- and anti-war movements, from the Civil War to Vietnam to the Gulf War
  • Corporate environmental policies (e.g., Appalachian coal mines, Love Canal), activists (e.g., Erin Brockovich, Karen Silkwood), and environmental racism
  • Individual or group responses to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, including recovery and relief efforts
  • Individual or group responses to tsunami and hurricane relief efforts in 2004 and 2005

In your reflection paper, describe the event. You should include descriptions of the problems and issues that caused the event, the rights being abused, the trigger point, major players, the actions of those who engaged the issues, and the outcome.

Once you have described the event provide 2-3 substantial paragraphs for each of the inquiries listed below. Be sure to include cites and sources to improve your score.

  • Describe why your event was a good or bad example of civic responsibility.
  • What was achieved by the actions of those that engaged the issue?
  • Describe the compromise and dangers the people had to face.
  • What suggestions would you have offered the group to further their cause?
  • Who were the most admirable people and what made them admirable?
  • What skills and behaviors did the leaders of the movement demonstrate?
  • What motivated people to join the cause?
  • Can you identify any issues that would compel you to invest your life in such a manner?

Based on your text for this course, we simply cannot ignore the role of social capital. To conclude your paper, you will need to prove a perspective that considers what the author of your text presented. How did the presence of (or lack of) social capital influence the movement. If the same people and issues were present today, do you believe that there would be enough social capital to create the same outcome? Be sure to use specific references from your text to support your assertions.

While there is not specific page-length associated with this assignment, the typical student submits 5-6 pages of script, following standard APA guidelines, not including a cover page (12 pt, double spaced, 1-inch margins).

For this paper I chose the following topic from the list above:

    • Advocacy groups for and/or against Native Americans, the elderly, the disabled, gay men and lesbians, farm workers, neo-Nazis, the homeless

I chose this because the homeless really resonated with me because I use to be homeless myself. I have done social work in this arena so I have a lot of experience on the topic. This paper needs to sound personal. Please use about 1-3 references. This is due on Sunday before midnight EST my time.
