Note: In this course, you will often see “state and federal” used to describe prisons. It is important to understand the federal government operates a federal prison system (the Federal Bureau of Prisons – BOP) that supports the federal courts. Each state manages its own prison system that supports its own courts – Arizona Department of Corrections, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, New York Department of Corrections, etc. Those who are convicted in federal courts may be sent to federal prisons only and those convicted in state courts may be sent to respective state prisons only. There is no hierarchical relationship here, it is only a matter of jurisdiction.
Other than jurisdiction, there are no major differences between state and federal prisons. They all pretty much look and operate the same (according to security level). Considering each state has its own prison system, all 51 prison systems have much in common with some differences
