Studying Modern Art
The internet contains a plethora of resources for studying modern art, its history, and the importance of analyzing the various styles, techniques and traditions represented by modern art and architecture. This course contains four internet resource activities that will allow you to compare varied forms of visual experiences, discuss specific styles within a historical context as well as evaluate the art forms according to their form, content, and technique. Each activitys goal/purpose is slightly different from the next; however, each will allow you to put into practice the analysis of modern art. For each activity, you will be provided with several videos and websites that you must view in order to complete the assignment. These resources are provided to you in the Reading & Study folder of the previous and current module in which the activity is due. Once youve completed all the items in the Reading & Study folder you will answer the questions provided below. These questions must be answered in complete sentences in a Word document. There is not a required word count but your answers must be substantial and provide details and examples to the questions presented. An ideal response would be a minimum of 75 words long. References are not required; however, if you do cite a source you must use APA formatting. Internet Resource Activity 1: This activity encourages you to explore the fine artworks that are in your own community. Experiencing art in person changes the way it is interpreted and gives the viewer better insight to the meaning of the work. To begin, access and complete the internet resources in the Modules/Weeks 1 and 2 Reading & Study folders. Next, answer the following questions based on your reading and viewing of internet resources: 1. What was the driving force for Eugene Delacroix and Theodore Gericaults paintings? Give at least one example for each artist. 2. Name at least two museums who have paintings by members of the Hudson River School. Make sure to include the Museum name and location along with the artist and title of the painting for each. Have you had a chance to visit either museum in person or online? If so, what were your thoughts on the paintings? How do they relate with the material youve learned about this week? Please complete the following Module/Week 2 textbook reading assignments: Art History Volume II Chapter 30 Art in Spain and Spanish America Early Nineteenth-Century Art: Neoclassicism and Romanticism Gothic and Neoclassical Styles in Early Nineteenth-Century Architecture
