The Bluest Eye
Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye the explores culture through historical fiction–a genre of literature. Literature is another artform that adds to our understanding of culture. We have already investigated how disciplines such as visual art and music help us process the world around us. The book was first published in 1970, however the plot is set in 1941 with Morrison referencing back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. On the syllabus page and in the announcements, there is a link to Toni Morrison’s author’s note for The Bluest Eye. The link is also in the table on the syllabus in Objective 5. Reading her commentary on her work may help you with the discussion. Telling stories is imperative to our understanding our society and culture. Use this forum to discuss whether you think that Pecola’s story is important and if you believe it fits into the larger social scene. What stood out to you about how the author tells the story?
