The Family Functioning Debate
Objective: Apply family functioning to child abuse assessment concepts and identify characteristics of abused children and adults; Differentiate between family functioning through a culturally competent lens. Instructions: The primary topic of study this week is family functioning in connection with minority family systems.
Why is there a debate when discussing diversity + child abuse? Why is it important to study minority family systems in connection with child abuse? What lens must social workers look through when working with diverse/minority families? Why would child abuse look differently depending on the family origin, rituals, and customs? How might families from diverse backgrounds interpret child abuse?
