Discussion Board Guidelines (from the syllabus)Discussion BoardEach week students are required to participate in two to three discussionboard forums (one for each of the required readings). The discussion boardsfor each week will be open from 7:00 am on Monday morning until 11:59 pmSunday night. Students should post their initial response by the close ofWednesday as to allow opportunity for a greater variety of peer responses.Late submissions are not allowed. Once a forum closes at 11:59 pm onSunday, it will remain closed. Additionally, student should work to avoidresponding to the same classmates for each forum. The two lowest discussionboard grades will be dropped for each student. Each forum will consist ofthe following criteria, which adds up to 100 points:1. The initial response to the literature (50 points) After reading theassigned text, each student will need to write a response(approximately 200 words) using the designated discussion board link.The response must reflect the students attempt to analyze, interpret,and/or evaluate a specific element of the text. The following questionsare examples that students can use to shape their initial response:a. Evaluate a major conflict in the text. Why is the conflictsignificant? Does the central characterresolve the centralconflict (why, or why not)?b. Analyze specific character traits within a central character. Whatdoes the selected character do or say some of the things he/shedoes or says? How do other characters feel about the centralcharacter (and vice versa)?c. Interpret a specific symbol within the text. What is the deepermeaning behind the symbol?Again, the above are samplquestions that can be applied to otherelements of a text such as setting, figurative language, tone, etc. Nocredit will be given for initial responses that are summaries, off-topic, orshort/basic. No partial credit will be given.
