Theoretical Analytical Frames
The midterm this quarter is an exercise in fashioning an argument and supporting it using multiple texts from your readings. Please respond to ONE of the prompts given in essay form of 3-4 pages in len. The prompts will allow you flexibility in how you want to respond. Please keep in mind the following components of a good essay: a direct response to the question you choose, a coherent thesis that is well-supported with illustrations and evidence from your readings, reference to multiple authors, and good writing mechanics. Please mind your grammar and spelling. And cite your authors in the following format: (author, page number). You can also use lecture materials and indicate that it is from lecture.The questions will ask you for example to address how theoretical analytical frames about the nation and nationalism (i.e. Anderson) may help you interpret a work of film or literature of your choice. Or how theories about colonial modes of looking (Said, McClintock) may help you analyze colonial images. Or how different kinds of realisms (Nguyen-vo) may help you place some Vietnamese texts or films in their historical contexts or analyze the gender dimension of these cultural works. Preview in your intro your argument as well as the concepts that might help your analysis. In the body of your essay, please explain relevant concepts from class lecture/discussion and any relevant academic reading such as McClintock, and make your analysis of one of both of these cultural works.
