Value of Nursing

     Computer technology has enabled the transition of paper health records to an electronic format. It has led to the specialty area of nursing informatics. The field of nursing informatics brings nurses into the planning, implementation and integration of the information system advancements (Ozbolt, & Saba, 2008). Historically, documentation by nurses relates to data that shows compliance with medical orders or other mandated reporting requirements (Thede, 2008). This is data that does not include independent decisions about nursing problems or about the thinking process nurses go through to make their daily decisions (Lundberg, et al.[TA1] ). Putting all nursing information into a computerized form enables nurses to reveal the significant contributions of nursing practice to healthcare outcomes and patient safety.
