Western History
In the Chapters 7, 8, and 9, we have explored centuries of diverse cultural developments in the context of the Middle Ages. For this exam, students are asked to write three short essays focusing on the separate phases of this dynamic period. Essay 1: The end of the Roman Empire in Western Europe is best described as a period of transformation rather than simply the collapse of Roman Civilization. Using specific examples of people, places, dates, events, etc., describe how Roman culture survived in the context of Byzantium, Islam, and the Carolingian Empire under Charlemagne. Essay 2: The period around the year 1000, following the invasions of the Ninth Century, can be described as a period of ‘recovery’. Support this view using specific examples of people, places, dates, events, etc.. Essay 3: Chapter 9 discusses the consolidation of Europe, from 1100 to 1250, which can also be called the High Middle Ages. While the earlier period around 1000 can be described as a period of ‘recovery’, the High Middle Ages are often considered a period of “achievement”. Support this view of the period using specific examples of people, places, dates, events, etc.. Each essay should be 2 full pages, double spaced, Arial font 11. Please submit these three separate essays as one document.
